Astronaut to speak at Quilt Show
The Times

WESTFIELD - NASA Astronaut, and Hoosier native Dr. David Wolf will share his experiences in space at the Indianapolis Quilt Guild's Biennial Quilt Show.

The show, Oct. 20-21, is scheduled to take place in Westfield Middle School, 45 W Hoover St.

This year's expanded show will exhibit more than 350 member quilts and all 179 quilts in the "Fly Me To The Moon" exhibit, commemorating the moon landing and all Apollo missions.

Wolf will share his experiences at 2:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Oct. 20. He'll be in attendance from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will be available to answer questions

Visitors may view the quilts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Admission is $10 for adults but free for children 12 and younger accompanied by an adult.

"This year's expanded show includes many new features. In addition to more than 350 member quilts on display, we invited the Indianapolis Modern Quilt guild and the Quilts of Valor State Coordinator to display their quilts and share information about their organizations," said Maureen Weflen, Quilt Show co-chair. "We are the only Midwest location to exhibit the entire collection of 179 art quilts in the 'Fly Me To The Moon' exhibit. And we couldn't be more honored that NASA astronaut Dr. David Wolf will be with us Friday afternoon to share his experiences in space."

Wolf said it's his honor to speak at the event.

"It is an honor to convey the magical world of spaceflight to such a passionate group as The Quilters Guild," Wolf said. "These are the rare people who use their skill, their hands, and their vision to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Every stitch is placed with heart and soul that the 'Space Program' would envy and with that similar passion which drives humans to explore Space, proving we have no limits. The building of spacecraft themselves is heavily dependent on the very art of quilting. Such precision is crucial to the thermal blankets that protect us from the fiery atmospheric reentry back to Earth."

The show also includes a silent Auction on Friday and a live auction of small quilts at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21.

Dr Wolf has offered a fabric item that spent time in space for the auction.

There is a Bed Turning of Antique Quilts, 22 vendors, vendor demonstrations of the latest quilting tools and techniques, the Peony Shoppe has new and resale quilting/craft items for sale at bargain prices, and a food court.

Complete show information can be found on the guild's website: quiltguildindy.net.
