CICERO - The members of the Kiwanis Club of Cicero have elected officers for the 2017-18 year. Keith Ecker will serve as President, Martyn Furnish, Immediate Past President, Robin Mills, President Elect, Alford Wilson, Treasurer and Dottie Carlson as Secretary. Directors at Large include Dick Blose, John Kidwell, Mitch Russell and Steve Piegza.
Ecker, who wanted to get more involved in the community, credits former colleague, Bob Gordon, former principal of Hamilton Heights Elementary School and former Kiwanian, as a huge influence in his decision to join the local Kiwanis club.
"I wanted to get more involved in the community and became a part of this great service club in 2002," he said. "Each year I have gladly renewed my membership because of the camaraderie, the community-oriented activities, and the interesting presentations at our meetings."
Ecker is a local educator serving Hamilton Heights School Corporation as its Data Coach.
"Another compelling reason for my continued membership was the phenomenal contributions the club makes each year through our school affiliated groups and the incredible amount of scholarship money we are able to distribute to local graduating students. Last year alone we provided over $5,000 in scholarships. That is quite impressive for a group and community our size," Ecker said.
Furnish, two-time Club President (2013-14 and 2016-17), said he is confident that the new board is one of the best assembled and will provide great direction in the start of its next 40 years under the leadership of Ecker.
"The local club continues to grow with new members and remains strong in its mission and service to the greater Cicero-area community," said Furnish, who is preparing to assume the role of Lieutenant Governor of the Sycamore South Division of Indiana District of Kiwanis.
"Martyn has been a wonderful leader and inspiration for our club," Ecker said. "Thanks to his leadership, it will be much easier for me to step into the role of club president. I am eager to continue to build upon the very strong foundation he has set for our club during his tenure as president. We congratulate Martyn and wish him the best in his new role as our division's Lieutenant Governor."
Official transition to 2017-18 leadership team will take place on Saturday, at the Club's annual dinner and in conjunction with its 40th Anniversary celebration at 10 West in Cicero.
