Atlanta New Earth Festival set for Sept. 23-24
ATLANTA - The 44th annual New Earth Festival is scheduled for Sept. 23-24 at Atlanta.

More than 600 vendor booths of unique arts, crafts, collectibles, and food of all kind will be available.

Free entertainment this year include The Flying Toasters, Jeremy Morris, and The Singing Contractors for Sunday morning services.

Career fair offers options
SHERIDAN - The Sheridan Youth Assistance Program will play host to its second annual Student Career Exploration Fair 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 2, in the Sheridan High School Gymnasium.

Students in grades 8 through 12 from Sheridan, Hamilton Heights, Tipton, and Clinton Central are invited to attend the hands-on, interactive career fair which will highlight skilled trades in advanced manufacturing, the hospitality industry, agriculture, human services, health care, transportation, construction, and information technology.

County schools receive Gold Stars
Guerin Catholic High School, Noblesville, and Hamilton Heights Middle School, Arcadia, have been named Gold Star Schools for 2017 by the Indiana Department of Education.

Guerin is a renewal Gold Star School, and HHMS is a first-time recipient.

Judges celebrate Constitution Day by visiting students across the state
More than 4,000 students across the state will celebrate Constitution Day with judges and Supreme Court staff attorneys visiting their classrooms, Sept. 17.

Indiana courts are recognizing the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, Sept. 17, 1787, with a program that brings judges into schools.

Heights teacher named Teacher of the Year finalist.
ARCADIA - Julie Oelschlager, Hamilton Heights High School business teacher, is one of the finalist for the 2018 Teach of the Year Award.

Oelschlager has made quite an impact during her seven-year tenure as an educator. She has had an exceptional impact on the students, business curriculum, and programs in which she has created or served as sponsor.

White's historic first day to be celebrated
ARCADIA - On Aug. 31, 1987, Ryan White entered Hamilton Heights High School with his fellow students.

As a person with AIDS, White faced many challenges at a time when much about the disease was unknown.

To celebrate White's life and legacy, community leaders will be reflecting on that historic day. State Rep. Tony Cook, Hamilton Heights High School principal at that time, will discuss White's first day of school at the event.

Fire destroys Cicero home
CICERO - Fire destroyed a Cicero home Monday, and damaged two neighboring homes.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire, reported at 7:20 p.m.

The occupants were not at home when the fire started, but called the Cicero Fire Department when they returned to the residence, at 1209 Frogs Leap.

'Picture a Better World' photo contest at HNPL
CICERO - Hamilton North Public Library wants to see how Hamilton County residents "Picture a Better World."

The Library and Friends of the Library organization are sponsoring a photo contest for Hamilton County residents, encouraging them to get out their cameras and capture potential award-winning photographs.

"Picture a Better World," is this year's theme for the library's annual competition features three divisions for entering and prizes in all categories.

Oelschlager will represent Hamilton Heights at the state Teacher of the Year competition in Indianapolis this fall.

CICERO - On July 11, local photographer Sally Wolf shares tips and tricks of the trade at the next Friends of the Library's Tuesdays with Friends event.

The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Hamilton North Public Library in Cicero. Photography enthusiasts, newbies and even the digitally challenged are invited to learn more about taking better photographs.

MAMA's Cupboard Project Completed
SHERIDAN - Last fall the Sheridan Rotary Club partnered up with the Carmel Rotary Club to obtain a matching Rotary District 6560 grant to put a new roof on the MAMA's Cupboard Food Pantry facility in uptown Sheridan.

The clubs are proud to announce that the project is complete and MAMA's Cupboard has a brand new roof.

HHSC grant from Duke Energy to fund Summer Jumpstart Program
ARCADIA - Hamilton Heights School Corporation has received a $25,000 grant from Duke Energy to help fund a new program set to begin in July.

The program, entitled HHSC Summer Jumpstart, has been designed for Heights most "at-risk" students who recently completed Kindergarten, first and second grades. A maximum of 60 students can participate in this interactive remedial reading program that will be conducted for four-and-a-half hours for 10 days prior to the start of the school year.

KNC Bright Light 612 won grand champion steer at the 2017 Indiana Angus Association Junior Preview Show, June 11 in Lebanon. Dylan Young, Cicero, owns the April 2016 son of S A V Bright Lights 3400. Ryan Rash, Crockett, Texas, evaluated the 89 entries.

Hamilton Heights Elementary School third-grade teachers took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a slight twist. Instead of a bucket of ice and water, they would be the human targets for ice water-filled balloons.
