Heights resource officer nominated for award
ARCADIA - Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Tindal has been nominated for the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) Regional Exceptional Service Award.

Tindal, who has served as School Resource Officer (SRO) at Hamilton Heights Middle School since 2014, has made a positive and far-reaching impact on the students and faculty of the school, according to those in contact with him on a daily basis.

Heights educators to celebrate life of Ryan White
ARCADIA - Former Hamilton Heights' student Ryan White left a legacy not only on the local school district but on the country as well. Hamilton Heights Middle School 7th and 8th grade teachers are honoring that legacy by co-teaching a week-long unit that takes students on the journey through White's life using newspaper articles, videos, and culminating with a presentation by Rep. Tony Cook's a 9 a.m. on Friday, May 5.

School referendums pass
All three Hamilton School referendums were passed in the special election Tuesday. Sheridan, Westfield, and Carmel all had referendums at stake.

Sheridan's referendum passed with 73 percent of the total 726 voters saying yes.

ARCADIA - The Hamilton Heights High School Chapter of the Business Professionals of America enjoyed another successful State Leadership Conference in Indianapolis with nearly 35 qualifying for competition at the National Conference in Orlando, Florida in May 10-14.

Easter Bunny to visit Sheridan Library
SHERIDAN - With the generous help of the Friends of the Library and several volunteer community members, the Easter Bunny is again coming to the Sheridan Public Library to visit community boys and girls, and children of all ages on Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Sheridan Rotarians do community service
SHERIDAN - Sheridan Rotarians were busy this past week. Some were taking care of important club business in the monthly club board meeting while the some were busy installing some shelving units in the Sheridan Public Library.

Rotarians throughout the world work with their local communities to accomplish a variety of tasks and projects to improve the quality of life.

Cicero Kiwanis Recipient of Outstanding Community Support Award
CICERO - The Cicero Chapter of the Kiwanis International received the Outstanding Community Support Award by the Indiana District of Kiwanis. The award was presented by Indiana District Governor Dr. David Dixon, Ball State University, at the District's annual mid-year conference in Carmel, IN earlier this month. Martyn Furnish, Cicero Kiwanis Club president, accepted the award on behalf of the local club.

Sheridan Rotarians hear about post-stroke speech therapy
SHERIDAN - Do you know what APHASIA is? It is the loss or impairment of the ability to use or comprehend words. It is quite common among stroke victims and can also occur with other types of brain traumas. This devastating condition is the 3rd largest cause of death among the elderly and each year nearly 800,000 people in this country suffer a stroke.

The Museum on Main Street
SHERIDAN - Did you know Sheridan has a museum on Main Street? It is not real big and it is not manned by highly paid professionals, but it competently tells the story of who we are and where we came from here in Sheridan.

The Executive Director of the museum is Sheridan's own Jim Pickett. He is skillfully assisted in his work by all the members of the Sheridan Historical Society, but most especially by Stuart Neal and his sister Mary, and Winona Moss.

Heights schedules kindergarten registration
ARCADIA - Kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018 school year at Hamilton Heights schools is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 16.

Preschool Registration will also be taking place at this time.

Parents are asked to bring their child for screening activities.

Local lawmakers wear sneakers to support cancer awareness
INDIANAPOLIS - Area legislators laced up their sneakers with their suits today at the Statehouse to help raise cancer awareness.

State Reps. Todd Huston (R-Fishers), Kathy Kreag Richardson (R-Noblesville), Donna Schaibley (R-Carmel) and Tony Cook (R-Cicero) participated in the annual event. The Suits and Sneakers challenge is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to help raise cancer awareness and support and those affected by the disease.

Canaday shares stories and patriotic gift slated for WWII Museum
CICERO - Fishers resident, Brig. Gen. Don Canaday (ret.), Past President of Kiwanis International, was the guest speaker at last week's Cicero Kiwanis meeting. The U.S. Army veteran brought with him stories along with a special flag and the history behind it.

Canaday explained the flag was hand crafted in Bastone, Belgium by a woman who had lived in occupied Belgium for four years during WWII. She wanted to honor the U.S. soldiers when they arrived and made it in secret.

Sheridan's opens 'Little Free Library'
SHERIDAN - The Sheridan Main Street Committee, in cooperation with the Noblesville Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), has located and opened a "Little Free Library" on Main Street in uptown Sheridan. The library is located in the pocket park at the front of the JBS United Feeds parking lot just on the north edge of their office building. Sheridan Main Street is responsible, of course, for several pocket parks on Main Street but this location seemed to be just perfect for a project like this.

Welch wins Sheridan Rotary Speech Contest
SHERIDAN - Brittany Welch, a Sheridan High School senior, won the Sheridan Rotary Club Speech Contest, taking home a $100 prize and qualifying for the Rotary District 6550 contest. Each year Rotary clubs across the world sponsor speech contests for local students.

Heights teacher takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
Hamilton Heights Elementary School third-grade teachers took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with a slight twist. Instead of a bucket of ice and water, they would be the human targets for ice water-filled balloons.
