By Kathy Kreag Richardson Indiana State Representative, District 29
Indiana lawmakers gathered at the Statehouse last week for the start of the 2017 legislative session. As policymakers hold committee hearings and vote on proposals for new laws throughout the upcoming months, it's important for Hamilton County residents to stay informed and engaged in the legislative process.
At we start the New Year, households should receive my legislative survey containing questions on a variety of topics that may be discussed by the Indiana General Assembly. Answers to these surveys help guide me as I vote on proposals for new laws. The survey is also available online at www.in.gov/h29. Please complete the survey at your convenience, and provide additional comments on other matters that are important to you
Another tool to keep us connected is the use of electronic newsletters. I encourage citizens to call or visit www.in.gov/h29 to sign up to begin directly receiving these newsletters via email. I try to send one out at the end of each week to highlight local events, details about legislation, information about the General Assembly, and other important matters.
The internet is a great resource, allowing for committee meetings to be streamed live, providing details about bills and highlighting vote tallies. All of this information and much more can be found online at iga.in.gov. This is the official Indiana General Assembly website, operated by the Legislative Services Agency, which is a non-partisan office responsible for fiscal analysis, research, revisions of statutes and publications.
In this busy world, it seems more and more people are turning to social media outlets to stay connected. For those who are on Facebook, just look up Indiana House Republicans. On Twitter, our handle is @INHouseGOP.
For me, the best way to communicate is still in person. The Hamilton County Business Issues Committee will be hosting a Legislative Breakfast series, which I will be attending. The dates are Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10 and April 14. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 317-436-4653.
Visitors are always welcomed to the Statehouse. Whether touring the historic building or attending a committee hearing, a trip to the Capitol is always exciting. Please let me know when you will be visiting so that we can try to meet. Those who are between the ages of 13 to 18 should consider participating in the House page program. This is a great learning experience where students come to the Statehouse for one day during the legislative session to learn about the lawmaking process and their state government. I will once again be hosting an adult page day this session. Adults in our community can join me at the Statehouse on Tuesday, Feb. 21. We will go on a tour, meet for lunch and discuss issues facing Hamilton County.
If you are visiting, want to schedule your child to page or join me for adult page day, please email email@example.com or call 317-232-9380.
To be an effective public servant, I must understand the needs of our community. Please continue communicating with so that I can best serve Hamilton County.
