There is a Balm in Gilead
Spiritual Song
There is a balm in Gilead- To make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead-To heal the sin-sick soul.

Some times I feel discouraged, And think my work's in vain, But then the Holy Spirit - Revives my soul again.

By Teri Ditslear
Joy in the Journey

There are some days, weeks or even seasons we go through that are just rough to the soul. This summer has been one of those summers for me. My heightened awareness of injustices in the world, coupled with personal tragedies, and self induced stressors have piled up to the point of my needing some balm for my spirit. Last night, I was that lady who stopped in the middle of Little Chicago Road to watch the beautiful sun-setting sky. The sky was balm for my soul. God's creation does that to me sometimes, it just makes me pause to give thanks that life is simply beautiful even in the midst of pain, and suffering. (Yes, I did look in my rearview mirror to make sure there where no cars behind me, to avoid more unnecessary pain).

The lyrics of this song are loosely related to Jeremiah, the lamenting prophet. In Jer.8:22, the prophet asks the question, "Is there no balm in Gilead?" The spiritual balm that we look for comes in many forms, the best is by accepting love from God. Unconditional, irrational, crazy love is something that we have readily available to us. Sometimes, more often than we would like to admit, we either reject it, or we are not aware of the availability; we become blinded by shame, fear, or anger.

If you have access to a computer, check out There is a Balm in Gilead, on YouTube. Or, if you attend a church, ask your music director to play it some Sunday, your soul will be soothed. And, if you are not busy on Sunday, at 11:00 a.m., Roots of Life Community will be worshipping in the wind, Bluegrass Style at Federal Hill Commons. Come join us, it will be balm for your soul!
