Thank you, veterans

By Kathy Kreag Richardson
Indiana State Representative, District 29

On Saturday, Nov. 11, we have the opportunity to formally honor our veterans. From parades to wreath-laying ceremonies and words of gratitude on social media, let's come together as a community to thank the thousands who have served and those who are currently serving our nation.

Noblesville will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Courthouse Square. At noon on Saturday, there will be a Veterans Day Parade at the conclusion of a service held in downtown Indianapolis. More than 80 units will be marching from Michigan and Pennsylvania streets, moving south on Pennsylvania to New York Street, west to Meridian Street, and concluding at North Street.

In Hamilton County, there are multiple memorials and monuments recognizing and honoring those from our community who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those who preserved our freedoms. This includes the Fallen Hoosier Heroes Memorial for Enduring Freedom on Union Street, the POW-MIA monument at the American Legion Post 45 and the Veterans Park memorial.

Many businesses and local attractions honor our veterans by providing discounts to them and their families. Conner Prairie is designated as a Blue Star Museum and provides free admission to active duty military personnel and up to five immediate family members from Memorial Day through Labor Day. At all other times, the museum offers free general admission to active duty, retired and veteran military members, and 50 percent off general admission for up to five immediate family members.

In Indianapolis, there a many other Blue Star Museums offering free admission to active duty military personnel and up to five immediate family members from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This includes the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indiana Historical Society/Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, Indiana Medical History Museum, Indiana State Museum, Indianapolis Museum of Art and the NCAA Hall of Champions.

For the veterans in our community, the Veterans Service Office and the service officer working there - Lynn Epperson - can assist with a variety of veteran-related needs. Whether it's getting help obtaining benefits, exploring new educational opportunities and discovering civilian employment prospects, the Veterans Service Office located at One Hamilton County Square, Suite 179, is a good a resource. Epperson can also be reached by calling 317-776-9610 or emailing lynn.epperson@hamiltoncounty.in.gov.

Hoosier veterans and their family members can also reach out to the Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs for assistance. Visit www.in.gov/dva; to learn about veteran benefits, activities and organizations.

While we can never fully repay the debt we owe our veterans for protecting our freedom, we can express our gratitude for their bravery and commitment to this great nation. To all of our veterans who have served and those who continue to serve, thank you.

Kathy Kreag Richardson is a Republican State Representative from District 29, which includes Noblesville, and has served in the legislature since 1992. She also is the elections administrator for Hamilton County. You may contact her at h29@in.gov.
