Sharing our blessings with others

By Kathy Kreag Richardson
Indiana State Representative, District 29

This week, many will be gathering with family and friends to give thanks. As my husband, Perry, and I prepare to come together with those we love, it's hard not to also think about those we have lost, like our dear friend Don Jellison. Don was very special, and his positive impact on Noblesville will be felt for years to come. As we count our blessings this Thanksgiving, let's work to honor those we have loved and lost, by helping others in our community who are in need.

Whether it's time or resources, giving to others makes Noblesville a stronger community. Our city partners with various groups, like Noblesville Main Street and Nickel Plate Arts, to host a variety of fundraising events and they are always in need of volunteers. There are also volunteer opportunities with the Parks and Recreation Department and with neighborhood crime watch programs. To learn more about these opportunities to help our community, visit www.cityofnoblesville.org.

The Good Samaritan Network, which is a collaborative of non-profits in Hamilton County, is also a good place to start when looking to help others. By working with 268 agencies, 280 churches, 43 food panties, 69 schools and five hospitals, the Good Samaritan Network offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. They are currently seeking assistance with preparing meals on Thanksgiving eve and distributing those meals on Thanksgiving Day. Signing up to help is very convenient, and it can be done individually or as a group, just visit www.gsnlive.org/ivolunteer. From their warehouse to special events and holidays, the Good Samaritan Network welcomes your time, talent, skills and passion.

The Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank belongs to the Good Samaritan Network. This food bank helps stock the shelves of the food panties in Hamilton County, where 1 in 10 people face food insecurity. The Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank offers an online food drive help kit so that anyone can get involved in collecting needed food items. They will even drop off and pickup barrels for collection drives. To learn more about how to feed your neighbors, visit hchfoodbank.org.

Now in its 10th year, the Michael Treinen Foundation Turkey Trot continues to help Riley's Children Hospital by providing equipment so younger patients can continue to work out during their treatment. For those braving the colder temperatures and heading out to the race, which gathers at the Hamilton County Courthouse Square, I hope you find this to be a great tradition and way to start your Thanksgiving Day with family and friends! Whether running, walking or pushing a stroller for the 5K run/walk or the 3K family walk, participating in the Michael Treinen Foundation Turkey Trot is a great opportunity to help Michael, who was diagnosed with leukemia just days before his high school graduation, continue to make a difference in our community.

You still have time to sign up. For more information, visit Turkey Trot Noblesville.

There are countless ways to share our blessings with others. As we come together this Thanksgiving, let's think of how we can help those who may be in need. From including senior citizens in family gatherings, to babysitting for a foster family, you can make a difference for someone else.

From my family to yours, happy Thanksgiving. May your holiday season be filled with good memories, laughter and some great food!
