Street smarts: What you may not know
At our most recent directors meeting, Patty Johnson gave a presentation on her street department. Patty, assistant director Jayson Williams and their crew do a remarkable job in the city and her comments reminded me of the myriad and diverse services they accomplish throughout the year.

New faces guide fire department
In the past two months, we've had some major personnel movement within our Noblesville Fire Department. I'd like to spend this week's column about it because we have hardworking public safety employees that don't receive the credit they rightfully deserve.

Riverfront to make splash, not another 'Ripple'
Since the Riverfront Redevelopment District was approved at the Noblesville Common Council on June 9, the city has received several questions and feedback from residents and business owners. I'm encouraged by the positive responses we've received, but there have been a few concerns I wanted to address.

Thanking our city employees
This week is a special time of the year for the City of Noblesville workers as we honor them with our annual Employees Appreciation Week. This is important as I consider the City of Noblesville's 422 employees to be one of our most important assets.

The spirit of champions
It is part physical fitness and all heart.

On Friday, May 29, 60 police officers from across Hamilton County participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The event included officers from Westfield, Carmel, Fishers police departments, the county sheriff's and prosecutor's offices, Indiana State Police and eight members of the Noblesville Police Department.

Road warrior: Man behind the signs
There are more than 12,000 of them in Noblesville, and we see them every single day whenever we step outside. Most of them are made right here in the city and come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors.

I'm referring to street signs. A lot of people don't realize that the signs they see are made right by our very own street department - most of the time by sign and signal technician Keith Carney. Carney has been with the department for 16.5 years. Before that time he worked in planning as a building inspector.

Thoughts for 2015 grads
It's hard to believe that my own son Clay graduated from high school just two years ago. Sometimes it seems like it was yesterday.

NPD's Citizens Academy offers valuable insight
Are you interested in getting a unique insight into what a police department does? If so, consider participating in the Noblesville Citizens Police Academy. The program, which meets one evening a week for 12 weeks, provides community members with an in-depth look at what the police department does and how it really works.

Social media: Teaching an old dog new tricks
Social media wasn't something I had to concern myself with in my first year as mayor. However, as the city grows and changes so do our demographics. Like downtown, we're going to get "hip" with the times.

Fire department has evolved, grown along with the community
One of the many advantages of living in a forward-thinking community like Noblesville is our ability to envision what we want our community to be and then work cooperatively during long periods of time to realize that vision.
