Small businesses can report duplicative state requirements via new web portal

By Kathy Kreag Richardson
Indiana State Representative, District 29

Earlier this year, U.S. News and World Report ranked Indiana as the best-run state in America based on fiscal responsibility, streamlined operations and enhanced transparency. We can continue this momentum by further improving government efficiency, which ultimately saves taxpayer dollars and helps grow our economy.

Hoosier businesses need the freedom to succeed. Unfortunately, burdensome regulations can hinder their growth. When companies are saddled with excessive paperwork and reporting requirements, they are unable to focus on their operations and waste valuable resources on government bureaucracy. In an effort to identify and then hopefully eliminate redundant state reporting requirements that bog down businesses with unnecessary paperwork, policymakers are reaching out to employers and asking for their help in identifying these issues.

By visiting www.iedc.in.gov/programs and clicking on "Duplicative Reporting," Hoosier employers and local governments can share information regarding duplicative or redundant state reporting requirements. This new online portal provides a survey asking users to identify situations where they are required by state law, rule or guideline to submit similar information to at least two state agencies. Duplicative information can include notifications, tax reports, employment data and other statistical data.

The confidential survey is user friendly and only takes about five minutes to complete, and results will be used to streamline requirements or eliminate them where possible.

This web-based survey is the result of legislation I voted in favor of this year with the support of the Indiana Economic Development Corp. Further reducing unnecessary government regulations and streamlining processes will help local officials better serve citizens and employers succeed. Please visit www.iedc.in.gov/programs and help us identify these issues so that we can work to eliminate them.

Kathy Kreag Richardson is a Republican State Representative from District 29, which includes Noblesville, and has served in the legislature since 1992. She also is the elections administrator for Hamilton County. You may contact her at h29@in.gov.
