Internship opportunities with the House of Representatives

By Kathy Kreag Richardson
Indiana State Representative, District 29

At the start of each year, the Indiana House of Representatives welcomes interns to the Statehouse to assist lawmakers and staff with daily duties for the duration of the legislative session. These are great opportunities to get paid while earning academic credits, building resumes, networking and gaining valuable skills for the workforce.

Internships with the House of Representatives are open to college students who are at least sophomores, graduate students, those in law school and recent graduates. Commitments last the duration of the 2018 legislative session, which will run from January through mid-March. These positions are full time, Monday through Friday, with the work day typically lasting from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants earn a bi-weekly compensation of $750 and can also compete for a scholarship.

Internships are available in five departments, including legislative, communications, technology, policy and fiscal policy:

• Legislative interns work directly with an assigned group of state representatives and conduct research, respond to constituent inquiries, track proposals moving through the legislative process and assist with covering committee hearings.

• Communications interns function as deputy press secretaries who write press releases, guest columns and electronic newsletters. They also update content on websites, monitor news coverage and assist with press conferences.

• Technology interns provide website support and help livestream video for session and committee meetings.

• Policy interns research, track and analyze proposals for new laws.

• Fiscal policy interns monitor tax- and finance-related bills, maintain and track proposals and craft summaries of committee actions.

Part of my responsibilities as caucus chair with the House of Representatives is to welcome and assist new interns. Throughout the years, I have seen many interns progress from students to full-time staff members. Many former interns have gained employment at state agencies or in politics. Hoosier mayors, legislators, chiefs of staff and CEOs began their careers as interns with the House of Representatives.

Hamilton County is home to many talented and bright students who would excel as interns with the House of Representatives. Please consider applying today, and for those who may not be able to participate in January, we hire interns each year so consider future opportunities.

The deadline to apply is Tuesday, Oct. 31, and interviews are currently being scheduled. To learn more about the program or to apply, visit www.indianahouserepublicans.com and click on Student Opportunities.

Kathy Kreag Richardson is a Republican State Representative from District 29, which includes Noblesville, and has served in the legislature since 1992. She also is the elections administrator for Hamilton County. You may contact her at h29@in.gov.
