First official day of the Legislature begins with charity drive
With the first snowfall of the season, coming a little too early for me this year, it feels like winter is officially here. However, if we are going to have snow, the best kind is when it lightly covers the landscape but not the roads. The one thing this snowy weather has done is put me in the holiday spirit but it also reminds me the legislative session is almost upon us.

Consider those less fortunate this holiday season
Before you know it, the holidays and my favorite time of year will soon be here. The holiday season is a time of togetherness, shared traditions and of course, who can forget all of the great food? I am especially looking forward to the mashed potatoes and gravy as well as the pumpkin pie, which is just a delight. I always enjoy spending Thanksgiving with loved ones, and now that I'm married, I look forward to continuing that tradition with my new family.

We have so much to be thankful for, and while I have many fond memories of the holidays, unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. Let us not forget that this time of year is not just about finding the best deals or receiving great gifts, it is about coming together as a family and as a community, being thankful for what we have and most importantly, supporting those who are less fortunate or have fallen on hard times.

Protecting Hoosier taxpayers
When I was young, I can remember my mom and dad talking about the family's budget. They would discuss what could be spent on necessities like groceries or clothing items, what bills we needed to pay and if we had any money left over that we could save or spend. At an early age, sometimes that conversation meant being able to go to the drive-in movies or not being able to buy a new toy that week. But to this day, what they taught me has helped me manage my personal finances for years.

Many of you might remember similar conversations with your parents or the times they would let you pay the cashier, counting out dollar after dollar until the bill was paid. While the customers in line behind you got a little upset, this was a great strategy that parents use to help their children understand finance. Interestingly, you can apply some of these same strategies to understand our state's finances as well.

We are continuing efforts to restore public trust
Whether you work in a factory or teach high school algebra, we all encounter situations when our integrity is put to the test. It is important that when those situations arise, we do what is right and operate with the highest level of veracity, especially if you work in the public sector. Growing up, I was always taught to be faithful in the small things and stand up for what is right, and those core principles have stayed with me my entire life.

Accountability is our responsibility
Every year, since our leadership team has been in place, the Indiana House Republicans have outlined our goals ahead of the legislative session. On Tuesday, House Speaker Brian C. Bosma, on behalf of our team, unveiled the 2015 House Republican Legislative Agenda or goals for next year. The theme of the agenda is, "Accountability is our Responsibility," and we have worked hard this past year to outline goals that will restore public trust and ensure that Indiana continues to be the best place to live, work and raise a family.

First step is raising awareness
Knowing a problem exists is the first step towards solving it. In the United States, there are countless organizations that operate on this principle to help raise awareness about some of our nation's biggest concerns. October is both Domestic Violence and Breast Cancer awareness month, and while these topics might not be the easiest to discuss, if just one life is saved or impacted by raising awareness, I believe the conversation is worth having.

College GO! helps students prepare for the future
Last week marked the start of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education's annual College GO! campaign. The campaign, which continues through November, focuses on helping Hoosiers of all ages plan for education beyond high school. Whether you have a child starting school or are planning to return to school yourself, there are certain steps you can take to help prepare for college and career success.

Taking action against hunger
A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that nearly 370,000 Hoosier households struggled with hunger over the past three years. This accounts for more than 14 percent of our state.

As a lifelong resident of Hamilton County, I know that severe weather can happen at any time. However, experience tells us that preparation can help us better respond and recover from the impact of a disaster.
