March Madness at the Statehouse
For college basketball fans, the entire year is a build-up to one month: March. As the single greatest week for sports, this year's March Madness has already been filled with comebacks, upsets and last-second shots, and the emotional rollercoaster is far from over. It is amazing to me that five Indiana colleges made the NCAA tournament, and although four of our schools have already lost, I wish Notre Dame the best of luck as they move onto the Sweet 16.

Join me for Adult Page Day at the Statehouse
The Statehouse is not just for lawmakers and a place where bills are discussed and heard; it belongs to all Hoosiers. It continues to be the center of civic life in Indiana and a great place to visit with family or friends. Modeled off of the capitol building in Washington D.C., the Statehouse is made from limestone, collected from quarries in Indiana, and was designed in a classical Renaissance Revival style. Not only is the building an architectural marvel, with granite columns, ornate balconies and marble floors, but it also includes incredible historical markers like the George Washington statue near the public entrance.

Working together for the future
When you are with a group of friends deciding on a place to eat, how challenging is it to come up with a location that everybody is happy with? In addition to time constraints, one person might want to go to a nicer, sit-down restaurant while another might prefer fast-food. Eventually, after having a conversation, friends work together, compromise and come up with a location that everyone is content with.

Putting education first
The results are in: our state's graduation rates are up! According to information released by the Department of Education (DOE), just under 90 percent of students in Indiana are graduating high school, which is well above the national average. To achieve these high numbers, it takes everyone working together; teachers helping students after class, parents encouraging their children to succeed and students working hard and putting their studies first. With this collective mentality moving forward, more Hoosier students will be graduating in the future, and we will continue to outpace the nation.

Smart on crime, safer communities
Over the past 30 years, overcrowding continues to be an issue facing our state and federal prison systems. Many states, including Indiana, addressed this issue by just building more prisons, and like a Band-Aid, this provided temporary relief while the real problems went untreated.

At the Statehouse, we are reaching our halftime
This weekend was great for the Lady Millers as they won their first sectional championship since 1996! The seniors have been working towards this goal since they were in junior high. This is an amazing accomplishment for them, and on Valentine's Day, which made the win even sweeter. Every girl played their heart out, and I cannot think of a team more deserving. I was so happy to see the joy this victory brought these dedicated athletes, and I am proud to have witnessed it firsthand.

Courage built Indiana's legacy
In 1864, during the Civil War, Daniel Ferrier joined the U.S. Army as part of the 2nd Cavalry out of New Delphi. During one of the battles, his unit came under attack by Confederate soldiers, and overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, they were forced to retreat. At that time, Daniel noticed that his brigade commander had been knocked off of his horse and was in danger of being captured. Despite the danger and risk of being captured himself, Daniel selflessly gave his horse to the high ranking officer, who was then able to rejoin and rally his troops. For Daniel's heroic actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Part 3 of 3: Accountability is our responsibility
For families just starting out, one of the most important decisions to make is where to settle down and buy your first home. While many factors play a role in that decision, for most, two of the most important continue to be: job location and quality of education. Fortunately, in Hamilton County, we have both.

Part 2 of 3: Accountability is our responsibility
Last week, I began a three-part series on the bills aligned with our legislative agenda. As the second installment, this week I will be focusing on the bills that address some of the public safety concerns impacting Indiana, particularly the issues of infant mortality and domestic violence. Although these are challenging topics to discuss, we must acknowledge these problems exist, do our part to help raise awareness and then, take action to resolve them. We have several pieces of legislation working towards this goal.

Part 1 of 3: Accountability is our responsibility
When you set a goal, how do you go about accomplishing it? Do you maintain a daily routine or have an accountability partner? As a reminder, maybe you put items on your calendar or keep track of your progress using a journal. While many people set the goal to live a healthier lifestyle, the ones that find the most success have a plan in place to accomplish their goals.
