It's never too early to be thinking about swimming sectionals, even in December.

Noblesville coach Rich Wolfred said that one of the purposes behind Saturday's eight-team Noblesville Invitational - in which the Millers won both the boys and the girls competitions - was to get a sectional feel. It was a mix of both parts of the sectional - the races were similar to the preliminaries, where there were three heats in each individual race, while the scoring was just like the finals.

"We just wanted to come in and swim some good teams and get that sectional feel to the meet this time of year," said Wolfred.

The boys, runners-up the past two years, finally got to hold their own trophy again with a solid win over Mount Vernon (Evansville area) 457-365. The girls were behind Mount Vernon for most of the meet, but a great performance in the 500 freestyle pushed Noblesville ahead and the home team eventually outscored MV 472-454.

"Mount Vernon's a very good team," said Wolfred. "They probably won more events than we did. They placed better in most events, we just had a little bit better depth than they did today."

Indeed, Mount Vernon's girls won 10 of the 11 events (there was no diving competition). But the Millers' depth won the day. Only two Noblesville swims were outside the top five, and no one finished worse than ninth.

Taylor Parrish got the Millers' lone victory, pacing the 500 freestyle. Holly Haflich was second in that event and Kelsey Rowe was fourth, and those points turned the meet in Noblesville's favor.

The Miller boys won six events, including a nice performance from Nick Strader. He paced the 200 and 500 freestyles, winning the longer race by over 24 seconds.

"He's looking really good," said Wolfred.

Cameron Gill won the backstroke, and Noblesville also swept all three relays.

"The freshmen were swimming really well," said Wolfred. "Drew Sarabyn, Jake Seyfried, Collin Kinkead, they were third swimmers, but they all went best times today, so that's a good sign."

Noblesville will swim Yorktown on Friday and Westfield on Saturday.
