The Times photo by Richie Hall - Hamilton Southeastern defended its team championship at the Hamilton County Wrestling Meet Saturday at Hamilton Heights. The Royals, ranked ninth on IndianaMat.comís rankings and 14th in the coaches poll, won five of the 14 weight classes and held of Noblesville to win the team title.
While Hamilton Southeastern defended its team trophy at the Hamilton County wrestling meet on Saturday, every team had some reason to be happy with how the day went.
The Royals won with a team score of 240 points, earning five individual championships. Coming in second was Noblesville, getting its best finish ever at the third-annual event and also winning three individual titles.
Fishers finished third in a close battle with Westfield; both schools had two champions. Carmel was fifth and Hamilton Heights took sixth, both won one individual title. Sheridan was seventh and Guerin Catholic finished eighth.
The Royals are ranked No. 9 in the IndianaMat.com ratings, and No. 14 in the coaches poll. Southeastern is strong from the lightweights to the heavyweights, and this was evidenced when one looks at who won the individual medals.
Jack Chastain was the first HSE champ, taking the 113-pound title with a second-period fall. Chase Watson won at 138 pounds in a major decision, while Jackson Bennett won at 152 pounds in a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Hamilton Heights' Austin Hunter. John Tatom followed by grabbing a major-decision win at 160 pounds, while Josh Lee won the 215-pound championship in a 7-4 decision over Noblesville's Michael Yeakey.
All 14 of Southeastern's wrestlers finished in the top five. Chastain (13-0) and Watson (15-0) are also still undefeated.
"I was really pleased with how our kids wrestled, especially the last two rounds," said HSE coach Kyle Poyer. "I feel like we finished the tournament really strong. We had a few kids who wrestled beyond their seeds. I really thought the younger kids stepped in and did well."
The Millers got going at 145 pounds, where Derek Noon zoomed through that division. He won all three of his matches by pin to claim that championship. Noblesville's next two winners are still unbeaten: Mitch Hensley won a 12-7 decision over Carmel's Ben Krege at 170 pounds, and Ben Elliott got past Fishers' Seth Riley in a 5-4 decision for the 182-pound medal. Both Hensley and Elliott are 16-0.
"We did a great job today," said NHS coach Tom Knotts. "I'm proud of the kids."
The Tigers also placed all 14 of their wrestlers, helping them to stay ahead of the Shamrocks. Fishers' two champions were Jordan Lile at 132 pounds, who won by a 5-2 decision over Westfield's Dillon Eldred, and Mitch Sliga, who cruised to a technical fall in the 195-pound championship. Sliga is 19-0 for the season and Lile is 18-0.
Evan Eldred was the first of the Shamrocks' two champions, winning at 120 pounds in an 8-5 decision against Noblesville's Niko Barrentes to keep him unbeaten at 19-0. Next up was A.J. Belden at 126 pounds, and he won that division in a gutsy effort, 3-1 over Carmel's Nick Patterson.
The Greyhounds won the very first championship, as Karl Wilhelm took the 106-pound title with a first-period fall. The Huskies, meanwhile, had to wait until the end, but it was worth it as Andre Porter got past Westfield's A.J. Gilchrist in a 10-7 decision for the 285-pound medal. Porter is undefeated at 10-0.
Sheridan's best finish was a third-place effort by Adam Hoover at 220 pounds. Patrick Vondersaar had the best placing for Guerin Catholic, taking fifth at 285 pounds.
