The Brebeuf Jesuit and Guerin Catholic boys basketball teams couldn't be much different.

The Braves rely on a spread-out offense with four guards averaging near double digits. The Golden Eagles depend on powerhouse Jack Hansen along with a big inside presence.

Brebeuf took away Guerin's height advantage, rebounding just one less than the Golden Eagles, while their guards produced nine three-pointers. Brebeuf pushed past Guerin (for the second time this year) in the final quarter, winning 58-51.

"We weren't as sharp as we were in the last five games we've won," Golden Eagle head coach Pete Smith said. "But give Brebeuf a lot of credit, they present a lot of matchup problems. We have to change our line up more to match to them than they have to change theirs to match with us."

Guerin was coming off a big Circle City Conference win over Roncalli Tuesday. After Friday's loss, Guerin drops to 3-3 in the CCC and Roncalli and Brebeuf will race to the finish line.

Brebeuf led most of the game, with Guerin right on their heels. A few Guerin turnovers were costly as they fought for the lead.

Jack Hansen scored three baskets in a row for Guerin at the end of the first half to help them to a one-point deficit at halftime. Hansen scored 12 of his points in the first half.

The Golden Eagles started gaining momentum at the end of the third. Hansen stuffed a Brebeuf shot then Luke Godfrey drove for a layup to give Guerin their first lead, 37-35. This momentum did not spill to the fourth, however, mostly thanks to Brebeuf bench player Josh Haubry.

"The second game they inserted [Josh Haubry] and [Spencer Reist] and they hardly played against us in the first game," Smith said. "They average around two or three points a game and they both stepped up and hit outside shots."

Golden Eagle Matthew Godfrey fought to keep Guerin in the game, scoring seven points in the last minute to keep Brebeuf within six or seven points.

"He just does so much work for us," Smith said. "We tried to spread the floor at the end where we tried to give him some opportunities to create a shot for himself."

But Guerin's missed shots and missed rebounds haunted the team as time ran out.

Brebeuf held Hansen to 14 points - he has been averaging over 25 per game in the last six games. Matthew Godfrey ended with 13 points and Luke Godfrey and Zach Munson finished with nine each.

"We'll get better from it though," Smith said. "I mean, Brebeuf was just a little better than us tonight."
