2/8/2017 1:54:00 AM BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles rally past Guerin
INDIANAPOLIS - The Guerin boys basketball team started strong in their Monday game against 2A Heritage Christian. However, an Eagle rally thwarted Guerin's victory as Heritage Christian dropped in a last-second 3-pointer for the 44-42 win.
"We failed to protect the lead," Golden Eagle head coach Pete Smith said. "We made turnovers down the stretch, and when we had the chance to make plays to put the game away, we didn't."
Guerin's 18 turnovers haunted them while an injury during the third quarter made the Golden Eagles rethink their strategy.
Golden Eagle leading scorer Jack Hansen went down with a left knee injury at the start of the second half. Hansen was out the rest of the game and his return is yet to be determined.
He had scored 18 in the first half, helping Guerin to a 29-22 halftime lead. They owned the first quarter with a 20-9 advantage but the Eagles outscored them the other three.
"We are not handling prosperity at the end of games," Smith said.
This is the second game in a row that Guerin lost by a basket.
The Eagles scored eight more than Guerin in the last quarter and the Golden Eagles had the chance to seal the victory, or at least a tie, with a free throw. The missed free throw was rebounded by Heritage Christian and the Eagles soared down the court to shoot the 3-pointer. And in it went.
"We're not learning lessons from previous mistakes," Smith said. "That's really hurting us."
Despite not playing the second half, Hansen led the team in points. Matthew Godfrey scored nine with three 3-pointers. Zach Munson finished with six boards and points.
Guerin (12-8) plays host to Franklin Central Friday night.
