The Carmel girls swim team celebrates their state championship.
INDIANAPOLIS - Not only is it a state record, it's a national record - and Carmel doesn't look like they're stopping anytime soon.
The Carmel girls swim team won their 31st straight state championship Saturday at the IHSAA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals.
"I'm really proud of these girls," Greyhound head coach Chris Plumb said. "They swam extremely well today. Championship aside, we swam well which always feels good so that's what it was about today."
The Lady Greyhounds won eight of the 12 events with a broken record, as well.
Senior Sammie Burchill accomplished her year-long goal of breaking the 200 IM record. It had been a day shy of a year since she won the 2016 state championship in the event and made the goal of breaking the record.
"On the bus ride home last year, Sammie said, 'I'm getting that record next year,'" Plumb said. "So it's been a year process for her and I'm extremely excited for her that she was able to come and do it. It's one thing to talk about and we've seen it in practice but to come here and swim that great race is fantastic for her."
Senior Emma Nordin won two individual events in the 200 free and the 500 free. This was her second 200 free title and her third in the 500. She was .17 seconds away from the 500 record.
Junior Trude Rothrock won the 100 fly and sophomore Kelly Pash won the 100 free. All three relays also touched first in their events.
Fishers finished in third place with three third-place finishes. Senior Lauryn Parrish touched third in the 200 free and 500 free. She also won the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.
"Most people see her in the competition pool and they don't get to see her in the practice pool - and that's where she really shines," Tiger head coach Jay Chambers said. "That's going to be the biggest loss for our program. It's not necessarily the points she scores for us, but that leadership is going to be hard to replace."
Hamilton Southeastern finished in ninth as a team with their 200 medley relay team reaching the highest placement at fifth.
Westfield's Erin Verbrugge represented the Shamrocks in the finals and finished 14th in the 100 back.
