MARION - The Hamilton Heights boys basketball team got off to a strong start in this year's state tournament.

The Huskies (10-12) cruised past Blackford (1-21) 83-34 in the opening round of the Indiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A Marion sectional.

Heights dominated the entire game from start to finish but particularly stifled the Bruins in the first half holding them to less than 10 points. The Huskies took a 37-9 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Heights didn't let up in the second half pouring in 46 more points against helpless Blackford. The Huskies finished the night with 83 points on 53 percent shooting from the field.

There were plenty of points to go around as four Huskies finished in double figures and 11 players scored overall. Junior Drayden Thomas led the way 14 points and seven rebounds. Senior Sterling Weatherford finished with 12. Camyn Lutz and Tyler Wiltermood added 11 and 10, respectively. Senior Noah Wallace also had a nice night on the glass pulling down six rebounds.

The victory over one-win Blackford doesn't come as a shock, but it does help the Huskies extend their win streak to four heading into a semifinal matchup with Delta (14-10). Delta defeated Heights 60-55 back in December.

The game will take place 7:30 p.m. Friday at Marion High School. The winner will face the winner of Tipton-Yorktown in the sectional final on Saturday.

The article indicates Delta defeated Hamilton Heights during the regular season. This statement is inaccurate, because Hamilton Heights defeated Delta during the regular season.
