This season Westfield will field its largest track and field team ever with over 100 athletes. The team will also be an experienced one.
"We have 22 seniors, so we have a lot of leadership and experience," head coach Roger Wachtel said. "We have several returning regional and state meet qualifiers, so we look to have a strong season."
Wachtel anticipates another strong campaign from his 4x800-meter relay team. The team finished as state runner-ups last spring and returns senior Aaron Bennett and junior Nick Leahy. Wachtel predicts that Charles Miller and Desmond Herrell will fill out the quartet. Miller was a state qualifier in the 400-meter dash last season.
Wachtel also expects big seasons from returning sprinters Evan Manley and Nolan Rodgers. These two will be joined by football players Dorian Henson, Chris Zolto and Drew Neustifter.
"All of those athletes are fresh off their state championship football season," Wachtel said. "We're excited to see them translate that success to track."
Wachtel also noted that Dainon Wray has been posting some excellent times in the 60-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relays.
When it comes to field events, Wachtel pointed to his two outstanding pole vaulters Justin Mamaril and Peyton Haack. David Mendoza and Colin Caldwell are also expected to provide strong performances as throwers.
