CARMEL - The Hamilton Southeastern and Carmel softball teams got their seasons started with a high-scoring affair on Tuesday night at Carmel. The Royals defeated the Greyhounds 12-9 in the intra-county opening game.
The game was a back-and-forth contest that left Carmel with a 7-6 lead entering the sixth inning. In the sixth, HSE outscored the Greyhounds 4-2. The Royals then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Hamilton Southeastern utilized two pitchers in the game. Alexis Macha pitched four innings and finished with five strikeouts. Jaylah Guilliam pitched three innings, struck out one batter and recorded the win.
The Royals scored their 12 runs on 13 hits. Four different batters led with two hits each: Jordan Rager, Abby Taylor, Ashton Kiehl and Libby Ratliff. Two others recorded two RBIs each: Kaylee Carter and Bre Zook.
Carmel was led offensively by Stormy Kotzelnick who went 3-for-4, batted in three runs and scored two runs herself.
The Royals next play tonight at North Central at 5:30 p.m. Carmel will be in action at home against Cathedral 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
