The Times

WESTFIELD - The Westfield boys track team opened its outdoor season Thursday with a 75-57 win over the Brownsburg Bulldogs. Despite resting athletes who qualified for Hoosier State Relay Finals Saturday, the Shamrocks had many young performers step with great performances.

The meet opened with a win by the 4 x 800 relay team of Jacob Mears, Derek Maue, Johnny McClure, and Corey Phillips. The Rocks swept the 1,600 meters with Noah Douthit winning ahead of Samuel Novak and Jon Huntley.

The Shamrocks also swept the 400 meters, with Justin Homberg, Drew Neustifter, and Max Gutwein finishing 1-2-3.

Mears, Maue and James McClure swept the 800 meters.

Additionally, Evan Manley won the 200 meters, and Drew Schmitz won the 3,200 meters.

Westfield's Colin Caldwell won the shot put and Byron Hubbard finished first in the discus.

The final win of the day came as the 4 x 400 relay of Mike Smith, Calvin Grenda, Caleb Sanburn, and Max Gurtwein, edged the Bulldog squad.

Other scorers include Evan Manley and Chris Zolto in the 100, Grenda in the 300 hurdles, Luke Tragesser in the 3,200, Dorian Henson in the 200, Ross Kreig in the shot, Elisha Lennon in the discus and Avery Tyler in the pole vault.

The Shamrocks are back in action 8 a.m. Saturday at the HSR indoor state championships in Bloomington, and at home next Tuesday in the first ever Westfield Invite.
