CARMEL - The Westfield baseball team opened its season with a tough opponent - the Carmel Greyhounds. The Rocks fell behind early and were unable to recover despite a few late-game runs.

Westfield lost to Carmel 9-3 on Tuesday night at Carmel High School.

The Greyhounds got off to a quick start leading the Rocks 7-0 after two innings. Westfield managed only three runs in the top of the sixth.

"Carmel has a very good club and on top of that we didn't take very good care of the baseball tonight," Westfield head coach Ryan Bunnell said after the game. "We started three sophomores and a freshman tonight, and it showed at times. As bad as we were at times tonight, we know we are capable of much better."

Three different Shamrock batters finished with multiple hits: Matthew Meyer (2-for-3), Sam Eaton (2-for-4) and Zach Collins (2-for-4). Westfield tallied eight hits and three RBIs as a team.

Carmel was led at the plate by Jack Van Remortel, Aaron Ernst and Rhett Wintner. Van Remortel went 2-for-4, scored three runs and batted in one run. Ernst went 2-for-4 and scored once. Wintner went 1-for-2, scored two runs and had a team-high three RBIs.

Five different Rocks took the mound. Meyer, Josh Stegner and Zach Zabrowski each recorded one strikeout. Tommy Sommer led the way for Carmel pitching three innings, striking out six batters and recording the win.

Westfield (0-1) plays Zionsville at 6 p.m. today.

Carmel (2-0) next plays at Hamilton Southeastern 5:30 p.m. April 10.
