LOUISVILLE - Hamilton Southeastern and Metamora, Ill., traded the lead back-and-forth on Saturday, but eventually the Royals prevailed 4-2.
The Royals captured the lead in the first inning. Dalton Hutchinson's sacrifice fly scored one run.
After falling behind 2-1, HSE evened things up in the bottom of the third inning. Owen Callaghan doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.
The Royals took the lead for good with one run in the fourth inning. The game was tied at two with HSE batting in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Jahanshahi hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored. A single by Tyler Jahanshahi batted in the final run to make the score 4-2.
Alex Scherer earned the win. He tossed one and two-thirds innings, surrendering zero runs, zero hits, striking out one, and walking one. Rutger Poiry recorded the last nine outs to earn the save. Andrew Morlen started the game. He threw two and a third innings, giving up two runs, four hits, and striking out three.
The Royals collected seven hits. Owen Callaghan and Carter Lohman each collected multiple hits. Callaghan hit 3 doubles and went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits. Tyler Jahanshahi collected two RBIs.
HSE (6-0) is back in action 5:30 p.m. Monday against top-ranked Carmel.
