It was another successful boy's track and field season for the teams here in Hamilton County.

The Carmel Greyhounds were dominant once again, winning their third consecutive team state championship.

Three other county school's finished in the top 20 at the state final meet as well. Westfield placed 13th, while Noblesville and Hamilton Southeastern finished in a three-way tie with Whiteland Community at 18th.

Of course, all this overall team success was fueled by strong individual performances. This left The Times with plenty of good athletes to choose from for our annual All-Hamilton County honors.

In the end, the paper has named senior Justin Mamaril as our 2017 Hamilton County Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Mamaril had an outstanding senior campaign. Most notably, the senior placed sixth at the state finals in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.95 seconds and was part of a 4x400 relay team that finished ninth in state. Mamaril also won the 300 hurdles sectional title and placed seventh in the regional pole vault with a vault of 13-09.

A number of Mamaril's Shamrock teammates were in contention for the county's top honor as well. Fellow hurdler Dainon Wray placed 10th at state in the 300 hurdles and won the event at regionals and at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet. Junior Peyton Haack was also a member of that ninth-place 4x400 team and finished 14th at state in the pole vault. Senior Aaron Bennett was the only Shamrock to qualify for three state finals events: 800-meter run, 4x400 relay and 4x800 relay (placed fourth).

With all these great performances, it's no wonder that Westfield head coach Roger Wachtel has been named our 2017 Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year. The Westfield program has been on the incline over the past four years. In 2014, the Shamrocks finished 55th in the state. The team has improved greatly over the past three seasons finishing 19th (2015), 15th (2016) and now 13th in 2017.

Other Top Players:

With that said, there were, of course, a number of other great athletes from other schools in the county this season:

Ryan Lipe, Carmel, Sr. - Lipe was undoubtedly one of the best track and field athletes in the state of Indiana in 2017. He was the best performer on a Carmel team that won its third straight team state championship. His outstanding season was made all-the-more impressive by the fact that he did it while recovering from a torn labrum in his hip that was surgically repaired in October. Lipe placed second in the state meet in the 100-meter dash and won the state title in the pole vault. He was also a part of two state relay teams, the 4x100 (placed sixth) and the 4x400 (placed sixth).

Carmel head coach Ken Browner gave about the highest praise imaginable for his star senior.

"He is one of the top three athletes that I have ever coached in my 27 years of coaching," Browner said. "He was deserving of the nickname 'Unicorn' because I may never coach an athlete of that caliber again. Ryan did everything at a high level and refused to lose no matter which event he competed. His performance in the state meet was a thing of legends."

Lipe will compete at the college level this fall at Alabama.

James Hardin, Noblesville, Jr. - This Noblesville junior had excellent season as well. Hardin was the only Miller athlete to compete in two different events at the state meet. He placed fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.1 seconds. He was also a member of a 4x400 relay teams that placed 19th. Hardin was also the Hamilton County champion in the 400 with a time of 50.86 seconds.

Noblesville head coach Kent Graham was pleased with the junior runner's efforts this spring.

"James transitioned from the shorts bridge to the 400 meter this season," Graham said. "He embraced the distance and became a very exciting 400-meter runner. He was unmatched in the county as an anchor leg runner in the 4x4."

Jesse Brown, Hamilton Heights, Sr. - Brown served as the Huskies lone state meet qualifier this spring. The senior acquitted himself well placing 14th in the long jump with a leap of 21-09.75.

Heights head coach Mike Hippensteel called Brown a great team leader and role model for the rest of his team.

"Jesse always stepped up at our conference and sectional meets," Hippensteel said. "He went over 21 feet for the first time at the sectional this year and placed fifth. Jesse then beat the four jumpers who beat him at sectionals to place third at the regionals."

Joshua Roth, Fishers, Sr. - Roth placed in the top 10 in two different state finals events earlier this month. Individually, he placed sixth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:12.5. He was also a member of the 4x800 relay team that finished fifth at state.

William Young, Guerin Catholic, Sr. - Young was Guerin's best performer at the Lafayette Jefferson Regional. The senior placed 10th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59. He was also a part of the 4x800 relay team that placed sixth.

Gabe Fendel, Hamilton Southeastern, Jr. - Fendel is the state's top distance runner. Earlier this season in April, he ran a 3200 in 8:50.56, good for the fifth-fastest time in state history. He was denied the chance to win a state title in the 3200 due to a false start at regionals. As a result, Fendel poured all his effort and energy into the mile run at state and won the 1600 state championship with a time of 4:04.7 - just short of the state record set in 2011 (4:03).

Tommy Glidden, Sheridan, Sr. - Glidden represented Sheridan as the lone Blackhawk state meet qualifier. He performed well placing 15th in the high jump with a leap of 6-02.

Josh Watson, University, Jr. - Watson was the strongest Trailblazer performer at the Carmel Sectional. He placed 10th in the 100-meter dash and 12th in the high jump. Watson was also a member of the University 4x100 relay squad.
