Westfield named top 20 team by Indiana Runner

Last week Indiana Runner released a partial list of its top 50 girls cross country teams for the upcoming season. The list contained the teams ranked 21-50. Earlier this week, ten more top teams were released. Guerin was on the first release at number 31. This week Westfield was named as one of the 11-21 ranked teams. That means four Hamilton County schools: Fishers, Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern, and Noblesville will be among the projected top ten teams in the state. The top ten are set to be named next week.

Coming in at number 14, Westfield is the only Hamilton County School listed on the new release. The Shamrocks placed fifth at their sectional competition last year, held at Noblesville. They finished that meet with 101 points, advancing to the Noblesville regional meet, where they tallied 92 points, finishing fourth. As the top five teams move on, the Shamrocks competed at the Shelbyville Semi-State meet, where they continued to excel coming in fifth place with 146 points.

The Rocks made their 14th appearance at the IHSAA State Finals where they took home a tenth place finish with 299 points.

Indiana Runner takes into account a team's record from the previous year, trends in the history of the program, returning runners, and projected results. Westfield was ranked behind the number 13 Brownsburg Bulldogs who finished one place ahead of the Shamrocks at state last season.

The Shamrocks have five returning runners listed on the Indiana Runner evaluation, three seniors and two sophomores. Gabby Dilick, Carly Bogdajewicz, and Madison Smith are the coming on as seniors for the team, finishing in 11th, 62nd, and 84th place at the Shelbyville Semi-State meet last year, respectively.

Incoming sophomores Sydney Clifford and Kyla Curtis both placed at Shelbyville last season as well. Clifford came in 49th place and Curtis followed in 78th place.

The Shamrocks' 2017 season outlook as projected by Indiana Runner: "The Shamrocks survived a brutal sectional and regional to qualify for the state meet, and they return five of those seven. Frontrunner Gabby Dilick, a potential All-Stater, gives Westfield a single digit scorer through the first three rounds of the tournament. The rest of the returners have the potential to form a good enough pack to advance through the tournament and finish in the top ten in the state meet. The 'Rocks have a winning culture: they scored in the 4×4 and 4×8 this past spring, which was no anomaly. That in combination with their returners will be enough for a competitive season, though the path is also dangerous and can always end in an early exit."

The Shamrocks begin their 2017 season Aug. 19 at the Bloomington North Invitational in Terre Haute.
