7/26/2017 4:03:00 PM Guerin's Gallagher is national champion
On the first day of competition at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in Kansas City, Guerin Catholic's Quinn Gallagher became a national champion. Gallagher, running for the Northside Saints Track Club, finished first in the Boys 2000 steeplechase in the 15-16 division with a time of 6:21.49. That's more than six seconds faster than the second place runner, Anthony Tirado of Lancaster City.
Gallagher is the only local competitor to place on the first day of competition. The Junior Olympics continue through July 30. Track clubs from Fishers, Kokomo, and Noblesville all have runners competing at the national championship.
The Fishers Fire Track Club sent the most Hamilton County track and fielders to the Junior Olympics, with 19 athletes qualifying for the final meet. Gallagher was joined by Tyler Backlund for the Northside Saints.
The 51st USA Track and Field Junior Olympics are taking place at Rock Chalk Park, the home of Kansas Track and Field. Nearly 10,000 athletes are participating in the week of competition. "Entry is based on athlete performances at Preliminary, Association and Regional levels of the 2017 USATF Junior Olympic Program. Competition takes place in six (6) two-year age groups with athletes generally falling between the ages of 7 and 18."
