Carmel Swim Club wins Team Championship Award
The Carmel Swim Club took the top spot in the Girls 10&U, Girls 13-14, and Boys 13-14 team standings at the Indiana Swimming Age Group Long Course Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium.
The combined efforts of every swimmer earned CSC the 2017 Overall Team Championship award. CSC scored 1964 points while FAST finished in second with 1473 points. Duneland Swim Club placed third with 1239.5 points.
On the final day of competition, CSC was led by individual champions Lynsey Bowen (1st - 10&U 200 FR), Berit Berglund (1st - 11-12 50 BK), and Griffin Hadley (1st - 13-14 200 BK). Berglund's time of 31.80 established a new Meet Record and CSC Record in the Girls 11-12 50 LCM Backstroke. Additionally, Hadley was awarded the Boys 13-14 Individual High Point Award as he finished the weekend with five golds and one silver.
Also making the podium with Top-8 efforts were Lexie Ward (4th - 200 FR), Carter Hadley (6th - 100 FL), Nicholas Plumb (2nd - 200 FL), Alex Russo (8th - 200 FL), Gretchen Lueking (2nd - 200 BK), Jordan Cooley (8th - 200 BK), KJ Sweeney (3rd - 50 BR, 7th - 200 FR), and Kayden Lancaster (5th - 200 FR, 4th - 50 BK).
In relay action, the girls 13-14 400 Freestyle "A" team of Mackenna Lieske, Colleen Duffy, Devon Kitchel, and Lueking outdueled SWAC for first, while the "B" squad of Maggie Love, Cooley, Ashlea Swingewood, and Delaney Kibler earned a spot on the podium in sixth due to a strong performance in the morning preliminaries. The boys 13-14 400 Free "A" tandem of Ethan Johns, Riki Iwase, David Gabrick, and Hadley were beat out by only 0.79 seconds, taking home the silver. The girls 11-12 200 Free "A" group of Courtney Fellers, Parker Kurzawa, Ava Grove, and Berglund earned the bronze while the boys 11-12 200 Freestyle "A" team of Sweeney, Nick Bleykhman, Lancaster, and Plumb closed out the meet with a second place finish.
Overall, CSC swimmers earned 186 personal best times between the morning preliminaries and afternoon timed finals. The results from each of the evening finals would put that number well over 200.
A handful of swimmers will return to action next weekend to represent Team Indiana at the 2017 Central Zone 14 & U Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.
