USA Archery championships open at Grand Park

Wednesday marked the first day of official practice for the 2017 JOAD National Target Championships and the 133rd U.S. National Target Championships at Grand Park.

The sports complex was filled with athletes young and old, coaches, judges, staff, and spectators, as hundreds of athletes stood in rows, eyes locked on their targets.

The competition starts Thursday, with the 1,200 archers broken down into age groups.

Frank Miller's 15 year old granddaughter Madison Moore is one of those archers. Miller made the nine hour drive from North Carolina to see his granddaughter compete in the championships after practicing archery for just seven months.

"She competed in the state competition, and it was just a smidgen of this," said Miller. "It was two days and there were maybe 100 archers total."

There are more competitors than that in Moore's age group along in this battle.

"For her to be able to come and compete like this, only doing it as long as she has...we're very blessed," said Miller.

Competition will begin Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at Grand Park in Westfield.

The 2017 JOAD National Target Championships is an event for youth archers that is held on the same dates and in the same location with the 133rd U.S. National Target Championships. The JOAD National Target Champion is named based on the combined results of the qualification and elimination rounds. There is an optional team round.

The 133rd U.S. National Target Championships is an event for Senior and Master Age classes. The National Target Champion is named based on the qualification rounds. Eligible USA Archery members and Guests are combined together for U.S. Open elimination rounds.
