8/2/2017 4:14:00 PM Wanted: Hamilton County sports stories, memories, lessons
At the end of June, I made my way to the airport with my friend and her family. I quickly checked my email and was greeted by a little surprise. Alex Pollock had contacted me and offered me something I had been hoping for for a while- the chance to write! As I headed to Washington, D.C. for a little vacation, I had no idea where this opportunity would take me, but I was thrilled with the possibilities it offered.
Now, weeks later, I am writing my very first column! It took some time brainstorming to decide what I wanted to do with my column. As Alex and I discussed some ideas, I considered writing about dance. I have been a dancer for fifteen years now, so I thought this would be the best approach. After all, it is what I have experience in.
When I thought more about it, though, I realized that might limit where my column could take me. There are so many athletes inside and out of Hamilton County, and I didn't want to focus on just a small portion of them. I began to consider other options.
While I was in Washington, D.C., I had the opportunity to learn about Lisa Fenn and her time working for ESPN. During her time as a television features producer there, she was able to tell the story of two wrestlers from a high school in Cleveland, Ohio. I encourage you to watch their ESPN special or read Fenn's book, both titled Carry On. This heart-warming story reminded me how important sports can be in the lives of athletes, coaches, fans, parents, etc.
So that's where I've decided to take my column. I want to hear about why sports are important. I want to help tell of the lessons sports teach and the memories they create. I can't wait to go on this journey.
If you have a story or a lesson to share, please help! I want to know why you think sports are important. Contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org so we can start a conversation.
