Indiana Runner releases final top 50 list

Indiana Runner has released its final list of the top 50 Indiana Cross Country teams. Four Hamilton County Schools made the top 10: Carmel (2), Fishers (4), Hamilton Southeastern (9), and Noblesville (10).

#2 - Carmel Greyhounds

State meet history: 36 appearances (last in 2016), 32 podium finishes (last in 2016), 8 runner-up titles (1981, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2009), 18 state championships (1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016)

2016 Results:

Noblesville Sectional: 1st place (44 points)

Noblesville Regional: 2nd place (67 points)

Shelbyville Semi-state: 1st place (15 points)

IHSAA State Finals: 1st place (40 points)

Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Shelbyville Semi-state)

Maddie Dalton (12) - 17:44 (2nd place)

Phoebe Bates (10) - 17:45 (3rd place)

Tasha Geisler (12) - 18:55 (26th place)

Sydney Haines (10) - 19:04 (33rd place)

2017 Outlook:

"The Greyhounds have won the last seven state championships, have not finished outside the top two at the state finals in nearly a decade, scored a perfect 15 in the state's toughest semi-state in 2016 and return two potential individual state title contenders. Yet here they are, not atop the rankings for the first time in a minute (as the kids would say). The good? Carmel does bring back senior Maddie Dalton (thrice All-State) and Phoebe Bates (sixth in cross country state as a freshman). Junior Izza Khurram (18:49 in cross country and a 2:19 4×8 split) should provide a great third runner. The 'Hounds aren't as deep as they have been in recent years: in sitting a few key runners in the regional, as usual, Carmel actually lost the regional meet. Make no mistake, though, Carmel is a serious contender again this year."

#4 - Fishers Tigers

State meet history: 3 appearances (last in 2016)

2016 Results:

Noblesville Sectional: 2nd place (67 points)

Noblesville Regional: 3rd place (85 points)

Shelbyville Semi-state: 2nd place (96 points)

IHSAA State Finals 8th place (282 points)

Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Shelbyville Semi-state)

Miya Wai (11) - 18:20 (10th place)

Tessa Kraft (11) - 18:49 (22nd place)

Abby Carter (10) - 19:01 (29th place)

Kamya Lapsley (12) - 19:02 (31st place)

Corrine O'Leary (12) - 19:05 (34th place)

Liz Rogers (12) - 19:31 (54th place)

Corrine Yorkman (10) - 19:33 (55th place)

2017 Outlook:

"The Tigers had their best team ever in 2016 and could be improved this year. Junior Miya Wai took a huge step toward the elite level when she finished third in the state meet 3200 this past spring. In addition, senior Kamya Lapsley finished third in the state finals over 800 meters and sophomore Abby Carter ran 5:06 for the 1600. Sophomore Johanna Strueder ran 5:16 for 1600 meters also, though she is not listed in cross country results from her freshman year. She may not run this fall either, but if she did, that would certainly help. This is a possible, if not probable, podium team that could be considered a fringe contender if everything goes perfectly for them."

#9 - Hamilton Southeastern Royals

State meet history: 5 appearances (last in 2015), 2 podium finishes (last in 2013), 1 runner-up title (2013)

2016 Results:

Noblesville Sectional: 6th place (106 points)

Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Noblesville Sectional)

Lulu Black (11) - 18:47 (10th place)

Maddie Mirro (11) - 19:23 (25th place)

Ellie Pedersen (10) - 19:27 (26th place)

Abbie Lohman (12) - 20:06 (36th place)

Katie Muhrling (10) - 20:19 (40th place)

Kayleigh Witt (10) - 20:20 (41st place)

2017 Outlook:

The threat of any (non-Carmel) team in Hamilton County is non-advancement from the sectional, even on a potential podium team. The Royals were that group last year, resting a runner with a minor injury and paying the price with their tournament life. HSE should make amends for that this year. Junior Lulu Black is a solid frontrunner; she qualified for the state meet in cross country and the 3200 as a sophomore. The Royals should be able to place enough runners around her to make a run at the podium especially with a good group of freshmen coming in, but as they found out last year, it can also end way too soon.

#10 - Noblesville Millers

State meet history: 8 appearances (last in 2016), 3 podium finishes (last in 2016)

2016 Results:

Noblesville Sectional: 3rd place (80 points)

Noblesville Regional: 1st place (61 points)

Shelbyville Semi-state: 3rd place (100 points)

IHSAA State Finals 5th place (245 points)

Returning Runners: (Based on results from the Shelbyville Semi-state)

Abi Little (12) - 18:11 (8th place)

Sophie Reichard (10) - 19:03 (32nd place)

Aubrey Swart (11) - 20:11 (83rd place)

Aubrie Deal (11) - 20:13 (93rd place)

2017 Outlook:

The Millers were fifth last year at the state meet. Though they lose three key members, Noblesville will still be a formidable team. Senior Abi Little has been an elite runner in the state since entering her freshman year and will continue to be. Noblesville is a deep team and should be able to find scorers from within its ranks or through newcomers. The range for this team is pretty incredible; the Millers could repeat their podium performance, or they could be out in the sectional. It all depends on how they replace the graduated scorers from 2016.
