Guerin Catholic bested Terre Haute North in the first of two games at the Zionsville Classic on Saturday, overcoming the hot, humid conditions and a field toasted and hardened by the recent weather. The Golden Eagles had the run of play, converting eight shots on goal into two quality goals by Andrew Garvey and Sam Grocki, the latter on a Matt Crandley assist. The defense helped goal keeper Will Oberndorfer net another clean sheet.
"We had a lot of challenges with the weather and the field today," said Coach Chris McGrath, "but the boys did a nice job of settling down and playing in the moment to create solid opportunities and put away the win."
The Golden Eagles then tied 6th Ranked Munster in the second game of the Classic.
"It was the second game of the day, and while we were pleased with the boys' effort as a whole, we were lacking in the finishing department," said McGrath.
Senior Andrew Garvey put Guerin Catholic on an assist from Freshman Lukas Pinon, who saw his first minutes for the Golden Eagles on Saturday.
"It was a nice ball," said Garvey, Captain, "that was something else. Lukas had literally stepped on the field thirty seconds before. He passed me the ball and we scored. That's quite a start for a freshman."
Garvey capped the scoring with a penalty kick in the second half after Senior Matt Crandley was dragged to the ground on a header attempt in the goal box. The Golden Eagles dominated possession in a game that became physical, as the heat and tension built.
"Our defense allowed Munster a nice goal and a penalty shot that they converted, so this is probably a fair result for today," said McGrath. "A lot of new guys got playing time and that was great."
The team closes out regular season play with games against University, LCC and Fishers this week.
