The IHSAA state swim meet got started Friday at the IUPUI Natatorium, and Hamilton County was once again the center of attention.
A total of 51 swims - 27 in the championship heat and 24 in the consolation heat - made it out of the preliminaries and into today's finals at the Natatorium. Swimming begins at 1 p.m., but not before the diving, which has its preliminaries at 9 a.m. today.
Not surprisingly, Carmel was the leader of the pack. The Greyhounds put themselves in excellent position to win their 24th consecutive state championship after qualifying 26 of their 27 swims for the Saturday finals. Carmel moved 17 swimmers to the championship heat and nine others to the consolations.
Trish Regan led the way, as she earned two top seeds. Regan led the individual medley with a time of 2:01.90, then finished first in the butterfly, clocking in at 55.33. Lauren Jordan earned a first seed in the 500 free (4:52.18), with Lacey Locke pacing the backstroke (54.65). Carmel also finished first in all three relays.
Westfield's Kait Flederbach also got two top seeds. She placed first in the 50 free with a time of 23.28, then paced the 100 free with an effort of 50.32. Both times, she finished ahead of Hamilton Southeastern's Carly Mercer, who was second in both events. Mercer's times were 23.63 in the 50 free and 51.22 in the 100 free.
The Royals overall got six swims into the championship heat, and three more into the consolations. Aubrey Hertzler made the top eight in the IM, finishing eighth (2:06.93). Southeastern made the championship final in the 200 and 400 free relays, and the consolation race of the medley relay.
Noblesville had one swimmer make the championship heat: Freshman Heather Hayes earned a spot in the breaststroke with an eighth-place finish (1:04.35). The Millers made the consolation in heat in all three relays, with Audrey Welklin qualifying for the consolation heat in the 200 free (15th, 1:54.18) and 500 free (11th, 5:04.67).
In addition to Flederbach, Westfield also made the consolation heat in the 200 and 400 free relays. Kayla Effinger took a spot in the consolation race of the 50 free, after qualifying in 13th place (24.27).
Fishers got its medley relay in the championship heat, and made the consolations of the other two relays. The Tigers' Alex Carmack also made the consolation round of the breaststroke after finishing 16th (1:07.21).
Hamilton Heights' Cheyanne Jackson made the consolation heat of the 500 free, placing 14th with a time of 5:06.85.
