Millers shock 'Rocks
In a defensive struggle between two neighboring rivals and conference foes, five plays on special teams made the difference in Noblesville's 17-12 win over Westfield on a crisp Friday night at Hare Chevrolet Field.

Noblesville (3-1, 1-1 in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference) earned a five-point win by defending against Westfield's strong kicker, Nick Dowd. The Millers' Jake Owens blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter.

In the third quarter, a fake field goal by the Shamrocks' Dowd was snuffed out by the Miller defense. Later in the same quarter, Miller senior Zack Niezer blocked a second kick from Dowd. The block came after the Miller defense held the 'Rocks inside their own 10-yard-line. It also led to the Miller's final score.

The Millers' final special teams stop came with 4:18 left in the game after Westfield's Elvin Caldwell scored the 'Rocks lone touchdown to cut the Millers' lead to 17-12. Noblesville prevented the 2-point conversion pass, keeping Westfield at least a touchdown behind instead of a field goal behind.

Blackhawks falter in second half, lose 20-14
FLORA -- The offense sputtered in the second half Friday night, but Sheridan still had a chance to win the game in the closing minutes against Carroll (Flora).

Facing third down with 3 yards to go, the offense had time to run one more play. But the called play broke down and a quarterback scramble fell short as Sheridan dropped its first Hoosier Heartland Conference game of the season, losing 20-14.

"It was supposed to be a dump pass over the middle," senior Austin Hoover said. "But our man was not open."

The Blackhawk offense managed just 90 yards in the second half as the Cougars outscored Sheridan 13-0 in the second half. The momentum shifted when the Cougars scored with 12.9 seconds remaining in the first half to pull within 14-7 of the Blackhawks.

Lewis Cass beats Hamilton Heights in Mid-Indiana affair
ARCADIA -- In a game that was decided on the ground, Lewis Cass ran over Hamilton Heights Friday night.

Leading the charge for the Kings was senior full back James Champ. Champ rushed for 147 yards on only 17 carries. His game high rushing total included two touchdowns, a 29-yard run to commence the scoring and a 16-yard scamper that proved to be the game winning score.

As a team, Lewis Cass rushed for 308 yards.

"They chipped away at us," said Hamilton Heights head coach Mitch Street. "They were able to run on all four downs and when you give a team four downs, they are hard to beat."

Even with Lewis Cass's dominant running attack on full display, the first half proved to be very competitive.

After Champ reached the end zone in the first quarter, Hamilton Heights starting quarterback Grant Weatherford tied the score at seven with a 98-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

Later in the quarter, Lewis Cass reclaimed the lead with a Jake Wilburn 1-yard touchdown run. However, Weatherford was not done.

The win came in the annual "Mudsock" rivalry game that takes place each year between the two schools.

"Well it's a big win for us," said Fisher's coach Rick Wimmer, "It's a big confidence builder, and it's a rivalry game for us. Now it's how we respond after a win."

The big story for the Tigers this week was the improved quarterback play of junior Zach Eaton. After struggling to start the season, Eaton broke out Friday night, completing 75 percent of his passes while throwing for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

Do you ever just look at the numbers?
High school football is a funny thing.

You can look at the match-ups and say that one team is favored over the other. You can say that this team needs to get a win if they want to turn their season around. You can say that if they want to compete in their conference they have to win this week.
