John Bates

Feb. 20, 1960-March 13, 2014

John Bates, 54, of Westfield passed away Thursday after a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. John was born in Chicago Heights, Ill., on Feb. 20, 1960. He was valedictorian of Joliet West High School in 1978. Mr. Bates went on to graduate with highest honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1982, and from Northwestern University Medical School in 1986. He completed his residency at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and a cardiology fellowship at Indiana University. He began his cardiology career at Indiana University, later joining the Care Group and St. Vincent's Health.

Mr. Bates was a loving father and devoted husband. He had a strong Catholic faith and drew great joy and comfort from his parish, St. Maria Goretti. He was active as a coach and an enthusiastic supporter of all his children's endeavors. He touched the lives of many patients and coworkers with his calm, quiet demeanor and high level of care. He loved Notre Dame and its sports teams, especially football.

Mr. Bates is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Ann (Schoenherr); daughter Carolyn Rose; and sons John William (Will) and Henry Joseph (Hank); his parents John and Ann (DiMonte) Bates of Joliet, Ill.; brother Joe (Leanne) Bates; sister Mariann (Steven) Wafer; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He will be remembered by family and friends for his wisdom, strength of character, warm smile, strong laugh and loving care to all.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 17102 Springmill Road, in Westfield, Father Kevin Haines will officiate. Visitation was Sunday at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, in Noblesville. Burial will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery in Indianapolis.
