It has an old-fashioned building and a 21st-century outlook: Strawtown Community Church is doing a good job of bringing together tradition and modern times.
The church is located at 23165 Essig Ave., just west of Ind. 37 and north of Strawtown Avenue. The church hosts several services, beginning with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m., with worship at 10:30 a.m. Rick Huffman, the church's pastor for the past five years, said the services are traditional, including all the old hymns.
The church's history dates back over 100 years, and the building was constructed in 1956. Huffman said that Strawtown Community usually has between 25-30 attended services, and that half of the parishioners are long-time members.
"We'd love to have a bunch more," said Huffman.
Strawtown Community also offers a contemporary service every other Sunday at 6 p.m., with Huffman's son and his family leading the service. A weeknight service takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The church offers classes as well, such as "Recipe for Fulfillment," a wellness class that takes place every other Monday at 7:30 p.m. Outreach programs include a food pantry and support of a homeless mission in Kokomo.
Also, Strawtown Community is hosting a Birthday Party for Jesus at 10:30 a.m. this coming Sunday. Everyone is invited. The church also hosts a game night on the second Saturday of every month, featuring board games and fellowship.
