Royals able to take down Lady Hounds in opening round of sectionals

WESTFIELD – The Class 4A Sectional 8 tournament is always regarded as one of the toughest sectionals in the state.  Tuesday night marked the opening round of the girls’ basketball sectionals and fans were treated to a great matchup in the opening round as the Lady Royals of Hamilton Southeastern took on the Lady Greyhounds of Carmel at Westfield High School. One team’s great season had to come to an end and unfortunately for Carmel they were ousted by the Lady Royals by a final score of 51-44.

The Lady Hounds came out in the first quarter and were able to hold a slim one-point lead over the Royals after one by a score of 11-10. The next two quarters would see the Royals start to pull away as they outscored Carmel 17-9 in the second and 15-14 in the third to take a 42-34 lead into the final quarter of play. Needing to put together a great quarter on both sides of the ball, the Lady Hounds just couldn’t build any momentum against the always tough Lady Royals.

Sydney Parrish led all scorers with points in the win and also grabbed eight rebounds for the Lady Royals.

The loss for the Greyhounds ends their season with a record of 15-8. The win for the Lady Royals is just the first step in attempting to defend their Class 4A State title from a year ago as their record improves to 21-2.  Their next game will be on Friday night in the sectional semi-finals as they take on HCC opponent Noblesville (10-12) at 7:30

The Royals and Millers met back on Dec. 4 and the Lady Royals were able to come away with 51-32 win.

Rocks moving on to semi-finals with win over Eagles

WESTFIELD – The Lady Rocks, who are the hosts of the Class 4A Sectional 8 also opened up post-season play on Tuesday night as they hosted the Zionsville Lady Eagles. The second half saw the Lady Rocks slowly start to build up their lead over Zionsville and they’d ultimately walk away with a 54-44 win.

The Lady Eagles kept things close in the first half as Westfield held just a27-25 lead at halftime. In the third quarter the Rocks defense stepped up by allowing just eight points as their offense scored 14 points of their own to increase their lead to 41-33 going into the final quarter of play. Needing to go on a run, the Lady Eagles just weren’t able to contain Westfield and the final score saw the Rocks add two more points onto their lead.

Ava Henson led all scorers in the game for the Lady Rocks as she ended with 18 points. Alyssa Crockett added in 16 points and Ashtin DeCraene chipped in ten.

The win for the Lady Rocks improves their record to 14-10 on the season. The team returns to action on Friday night as they will play the Lady Tigers of Fishers (21-1) in the sectional semi-final. That game will be the first game of the night and will start at 6 p.m.

The two teams met back on Nov. 22 and the Lady Tigers took home a 59-42 win.

Blackhawks season ends with opening round loss to Seeger

SHERIDAN – The Sheridan Lady Blackhawks had the luxury of hosting the Class 2A Sectional 38 tournament which got underway Tuesday night. The Blackhawks drew one of the favorites to make it out of the sectional as they took on the Seeger Patriots. Unfortunately home-court advantage wasn’t much of a factor for the Lady Blackhawks as they saw their season come to an end with a 45-34 loss.

The first half saw the Blackhawks give the Patriots everything they could handle as both teams were knotted up at 21-21 heading into halftime. In the third Seeger took a 31-30 lead into the fourth and final quarter as the Blackhawks looked for the upset.

However the always tough Patriots defense held the Lady Blackhawks to just four fourth quarter points while their offense scored 14 of their own to seal the win.

The loss for the Lady Blackhawks sees their season come to an end with a record of 8-15.
