ARCADIA - Julie Oelschlager, Hamilton Heights High School business teacher, is one of the finalist for the 2018 Teach of the Year Award.

Oelschlager has made quite an impact during her seven-year tenure as an educator. She has had an exceptional impact on the students, business curriculum, and programs in which she has created or served as sponsor. She brings the right mix of education, experience, style and student-centered teaching philosophy that actively engages students in the learning process, challenges them to think outside the box, and energizes the classroom.

She utilizes hands-on experiences, case studies, research, and real-life situations to improve student's leadership, communication and enduring desire to explore and learn about the world outside the classroom.

Backed by an undergraduate degree in Music Business, Merchandising and Marketing (2004) and MBA (2007) from Indiana State University, Oelschlager worked several years gaining valuable experience in sales and marketing in the non-profit sector between her degrees. It is, however, her belief that the purpose of an education is to improve one's life through knowledge that is the basis for teaching the skills and information needed for success in and outside of the classroom.

Oelschlager has taught some 15 different courses from Business Management to Web Design and Accounting at Hamilton Heights High School and Blue River Jr./Sr. High School in Mount Summit, Indiana.

Shortly after she joined Heights as an educator, she started the student-run Husky Fan Shop to give students hands-on business experience. Over the past couple of years, several new classes including Marketing and Management have been added to the business curriculum under her influence, many of which are dual credit. Countless students have obtained multiple industry certifications in Microsoft Office and Web Design along with Small Business and Entrepreneurship through her classes. Because of her efforts, Oelschlager was nominated by fellow business teachers as the Indiana Business Education Association Emerging Professional of the Year for 2013.

She has also served as an advisor for the Business Professionals of America (BPA) career and technical organization all seven years of her teacher career. Over the past five years, Heights' BPA chapter has experienced unprecedented growth and is currently the largest chapter in Indiana. Oelschlager is credited with mentoring multiple state champions and national finalists annually in her chapter. Heights' Chapter is the recipient of several awards each year including the Chapter Award of Excellence, Quality Chapter Award and additional recognitions for participation in Community Service and Public Relations. In 2016, she was nominated by her students as Indiana BPA Advisor of the Year.

"Our students succeed because of exceptional instruction in the classroom," said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. "This list of educators is comprised of the best of the best across Indiana, and I am grateful for the dedication and hard work they show each and every day. Our teachers deserve all the support and recognition they can receive and I am happy to honor them through our Teacher of the Year program."

The 2018 Teacher of the Year will be selected and announced in October. As part of the award, the selected individual is also chosen to represent Indiana teachers at the national level.
