A game-high 16 points from point guard Jordan Schmidt wasn’t enough to help the Noblesville Millers earn a win at Mount Vernon Saturday.

The loss is Noblesville’s third straight and drops the Millers to a game under .500 at 8-9.

Noblesville fell behind early, as Mt. Vernon (10-7) claimed a 14-9 lead after the first quarter.

Senior Damari Gatewood and junior Keith Rupert led the Marauders to a 25-19 advantage at the half. Gatewood finished with a team-high 15 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Rupert scored 10 on 2-of-5 from the field. The duo connected on nine of their 10 free throw attempts, and the Marauders as a team shot 10-of-11 (90 percent).

Noblesville had its highest scoring quarter, 15, in the third and were able to chip two points off Mt. Vernon’s lead. Schmidt buried five 3-pointers on the night, shooting 5-of-10 from behind the arc. The junior also also had a game-high five assists.

Junior Xavier Hines scored 14 for the Millers and senior Ryan Barnes had nine points and nine rebounds. Junior Jaron Youree scored three points — he was the only other Noblesville player to score — and the Millers weren’t able to muster enough offense down the stretch. Mt. Vernon outscored Noblesville 14-11 in a tightly contested final quarter.

Mt. Vernon shot 38 percent (16-of-42) from the field as a team, including 10-of-29 from deep. Noblesville finished at 41 percent (16-of-39) from the floor and 11-of-23 from behind the arc. The Millers only attempted four free throws and made two.

Noblesville will look to get back in the win column Friday at Hoosier Crossroads Conference foe Brownsburg (15-4, 3-1). The Bulldogs have won two straight and sit a game behind HCC leading Hamilton Southeastern and a game up on Noblesville, who currently sits at 2-1 in conference.
