The Guerin Catholic Lady Golden Eagles’ season came to an end Friday night in the semifinals of the Class 3A Sectional 27 semifinals against the Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter Raiders.

The Raiders erased a three-point halftime deficit to earn a 49-39 win at Brebeuf Jesuit Prep, the tourney’s host site.

Senior Sydney Geis and sophomore Nicole Cunningham led Guerin’s offense with a game-high 15 points each in defeat. Meghan Sandifer led the Raiders in points with 12.

The Raiders took a slim 10-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 14-10 second to take a 23-20 lead into the locker room.

Guerin’s offense slowed in the second half, however, which allowed Ritter to reclaim the edge by the end of the third with a 14-8 run. The Raiders outscored Guerin 15-8 in the stanza behind a brigade of free throws.

Ritter shot 14-of-20 (47 percent) at the charity stripe, while Guerin went 14-of-26. Geis connected on 11 of her 13 free throws.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot 35 percent (11-of-31) from the field, but kept the Raiders to an even lower 16-of-49 (33 percent) mark. Ritter was able to inflict damage to Guerin on the offensive glass, pulling down 10 offensive boards. MaKenzie Griffin led Ritter with six rebounds.

Senior Danielle Mason and freshman Olivia Labus led Guerin on the glass with six boards each.

Besides Geis and Cunningham, who scored 30 of Guerin’s 39 points, Carly Hammons and Hanna Bills both had three and Labus chipped in with two. Grace Hackett contributed one.

Maddie Briggeman helped Ritter’s cause by finishing with 10 points, including hitting two of the Raiders three 3’s.

Guerin ends its season at 6-18.

Ritter advances to the bracket’s championship game today against Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, who defeated Bishop Chatard 40-38 in the other semifinal.
