Charles B. Carter, age 82, of Sheridan, passed away Monday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2018, at IU Health North Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1935, in Pennington Gap, Va., he was the son of the late John Leonard and Minnie O. (Ewing) Carter.
Before entering the workforce, Mr. Carter attended St. Charles High School in St. Charles, Va. After high school Charles served his country as a soldier in the United States Army, where he spent a majority of his service stationed in Germany. Upon returning back to the United States following his deployment, Mr. Carter relocated to Sheridan. He worked as a supervisor for Pickets Poultry for a number of years. He also hauled coal for Hightshue Brothers and helped run the Sheridan Ice House. Mr. Carter was a great person to have around the house and the shop. He loved carpentry and was a very talented handyman, but his mechanical knowledge was where he excelled the most. If it was broke, chances were that Mr. Carter could fix it. That knowledge served him well during the years he spent at Pickets Point and Bill Kinkead's Service Station. He would eventually retire from Ford Motors on English Avenue in Indianapolis where he celebrated 34 years of perfect attendance with the company. During his retirement years, Mr. Carter also worked at the Sheridan Car Wash on Main Street. Even though work kept him busy, there was always time for family. Mr. Carter and his wife loved to travel, especially when they would go "home" to Virginia for a visit. His wife and kids, and eventually grandchildren, were his life.
Survivors include his son, Charles B. (Joann) Carter, Jr. of Sheridan; his daughter, Regina (Michael) Carter-McCullough of Sheridan; granddaughter, Stephanie (Chase) Carter-Markfort of Elwood; 2 step grandchildren, Michelle McCullough of Sheridan and Britney McCullough of Ocala, Fla.; a step great grandchild, Brantley McCullough of Sheridan; his brother, Ralph Carter of Sheridan; and his bulldog Jax, who is missin' him terribly.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, James C. and Clyde S. Carter; 3 sisters, Inez Clark, Eula Cooper, and Hazel Howard; and by his loving wife, Linda Mae (Reeves) Carter on April 9, 2000. The Carters were married on June 12, 1965.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2018, at Kercheval Funeral Home, 306 E. 10th St., Sheridan, with visitation scheduled from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. Reverend Chris Welch will be officiating.
