Carol LaVee Barkley, age 82, of Sheridan, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 25, 2018, at Riverview Health in Noblesville.
Born Jan. 7, 1936, to the late Carl and Wanitta (Ratcliff) Besser, she grew up in Kokomo, and attended Kokomo High School.
Her family was her world, and each one had their own special place within it. One part of her family was her church family, whom she loved very much. Mrs. Barkley was an active member of the Bible Church in Sheridan as a long time Sunday School teacher for the nursery class. Having the patience to teach children was a God-given gift that she used every day with another part of her family, her kids. For many years Mrs. Barkley was the go-to babysitter for numerous families in town. She cared for and nurtured them as if they were her own children. She would knit and crochet them hats, mittens and anything else she thought they might need. It wasn't just her babysitting kids that she made items for. She made sure that everyone in her own family had a handmade Christmas stocking. Mrs. Barkley loved helping her husband out in the garden and then canning all of that food. A lot of mouths to feed requires plenty of food, and plenty of ways to prepare it. That is where her collection of old recipe books came in quite handy. Family meals were a wonderful time to make memories with her kids, her children, and her grandchildren.
Survivors include her loving husband, Phillip O. Barkley. She and Phillip were married on June 18, 1954. She is also survived by her four sons, Daniel J. (Debbie) Barkley of Santiago, Chile, David L. (Tina) Barkley of Danville, Mark A. Barkley of Sheridan, and Andrew A. (Donna) Barkley of Sheridan; a daughter, Rebecca J. Barkley-Emry of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Janet Irene Martin of Greentown; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Paul Gilbert Barkley; brother in law, James Martin; and son in law, Jim Emry.
