FISHERS - The Fishers Tigers softball team got its 2017 campaign underway with a dramatic 2-1 victory over nonconference opponent Kokomo at home on Tuesday night.

The key moment came in the bottom of the seventh inning.

With the score tied at one, junior Kristi Gordon came to the plate. Gordon put a ball in play allowing Diane Abbot to score the game-winning run and end the game.

Senior pitcher Emma Wellington got the opening day start and completed five solid innings on the mound. Wellington struck out three batters and only allowed one run on five hits.

Senior Rachel Dunn and sophomore Mara Lorkowski pitched one inning each in relief with Lorkowski recording the win.

The Tigers played solid defense all night finishing with zero errors. Senior Katie Shaw was particularly solid at third base.

Offensively, Fishers was led by junior Briona Rance who went went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Fishers (1-0) next plays at Lawrence Central (1-0) 5:30 p.m. today.
