Edward Leon Pursel

Nov. 27, 1923 – Oct. 14, 2021

Edward Leon Pursel passed away on the morning of Oct. 14, 2021 at the age of 97.

He was born on Nov. 27, 1923, at the home of his parents, Arthur M. Pursel and Faye M. (Guilkey) Pursel of Carmel, Ind. 

He lived in Carmel his whole life. After graduating from Carmel High School, Mr. Pursel joined the United States Navy and served throughout World War II aboard the LST 49. He served in the invasion of Normandy, the African, Atlantic and Pacific Theaters (including Okinawa). He was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Signalman 3rd Class having been awarded 2 stars in the European Theater and 1 star in the Pacific, as well as Victory and Good Conduct ribbons and medals. He was proud to have served his country and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his shipmates.

Civilian life brought marriage to Virginia Rosalea Hanks, from Fishers, Ind., which lasted for more than 70 years. Growing up on a farm in Carmel, Mr. Pursel loved farming and continued to farm, raise beef and horses.  He pursued hairstyling as his livelihood, owning his own salon in the Glendale area until his retirement at the age of 70.

He was a member of the American Legion, Carmel VFW #10003, and held offices in the Lions Club, Carmel Chapter. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his wife, Rosie; his children, Judy Pursel, Jane Pursel (Rick) Warwick and Jon Pursel; his four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brother, Arthur Pursel, Jr.

Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021 in White Chapel Church, 5155 E. 116th Street, Carmel, and where the Funeral Service will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Union Chapel Cemetery. Bussell Family Funerals is privileged to serve and care for the family.
