(Sixth in a Series)

Uncommitted to a conference, Guerin Catholic has been able to slowly build its varsity football schedule the past three seasons. During this period of time the Golden Eagles at post-season have participated in Class 1A tourney competition.

Outstanding is Guerin's early success in the post season. Although as yet to claim a sectional championship, the Eagles are 4-3 in post-season games. They reached the sectional finals two seasons ago before falling to eventual state champion Sheridan.

This upcoming season, the first for new head coach Andrew Kremer, will be a challenging one. Only four of Guerin Catholic's nine regular season games will be against Class 1A teams. The Eagles will face Indianapolis Lutheran, Lafayette Central Catholic, Indiana Deaf and Wes-Del. Two of those four games are against very strong football programs, Lafayette Catholic and Ritter. After finishing second in the state in 2006, Ritter won the 1A state championship last year.

Guerin Catholic also will face 4A Greenwood, 3A Brebeuf and 2A foes Park Tudor, Ritter and Winchester.

After opening t-he season Aug. 21 on the road at Park Tudor, Guerin Catholic will step into the spotlight for its second game of the year, facing Brebeuf at 12 noon on Aug. 29 in the Marsh Hoosier Classic at Lucas Oil Stadium. It's a Saturday date for the Golden Eagles.

Two private schools working from the same drawing base, Guerin Catholic and Brebeuf already have a good football rivalry in place. The Eagles won the first contest, 42-39, three years ago, but since then Brebeuf has dominated, 47-21 last year and 33-0 two seasons back.

Last season Guerin Catholic defeated Park Tudor, Lutheran, Indiana Deaf, Edinburgh and Eastern, finishing the year (5-6) with its first five-win record. The Eagles were 4-8 the previous season and 4-7 in their first year of varsity football.

Guerin Catholic has posted a history of finishing strong. The Eagles won their last three regular season games last year before losing to Clinton Central in the opening round of the sectional. Including sectional wins over Tri-Central and Clinton Prairie, two years ago the Eagles won three of their last four games.

Greenwood, Winchester and Wes-Del are new opponents this season, replacing Lapel, Pendleton Heights and Edinburgh.

This will be the second season for Guerin Catholic to open against Park Tudor. The Golden Eagles defeated Park 31-14 last year.
