IU Health Announces $287M Expansion in Fishers

Ten years after opening a 38-bed specialty-care focused hospital at 136th St. and I-69, Indiana University Health is planning a significant investment in its healthcare footprint in Fishers, Indiana.

The $287 million investment approved by the IU Health Board of Directors in late October will include a significant expansion of the IU Health Saxony Hospital campus and high-quality services, and the addition of offsite, outpatient access to primary care and specialists to more holistically meet the needs of one of Indiana’s fastest-growing communities. In recognition of this growth, this community investment will include a re-naming of the hospital campus to IU Health Fishers, to be phased in throughout the duration of the project.

“Fishers is the sixth largest city in Indiana today, and with notable population growth expected each year, could be as much as 50 percent larger by the year 2040,” said Doug Puckett, president of IU Health’s Indianapolis Suburban Region, which includes IU Health North, Saxony, Tipton and West hospitals. “Community members and leaders have told us what they need and want from IU Health to best serve that growth. This investment will allow us to do that.”

The planned expansion will add stand-alone outpatient physician office developments in the community and grow the square footage of the hospital campus by nearly 50 percent. The hospital expansion will add:

• 50 inpatient beds, bringing the total to 88.
• New and expanded services in Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ear, Nose & Throat, Nephrology, Neurology, and Pulmonology.
• Growth of existing specialty programs in Cardiovascular, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Primary Care (pediatric and adult), and Urology.
• Expansion of support services space to accommodate additional staff and higher patient volumes.

“Through research and patient migration patterns, we’ve found that many patients in the Fishers community and on the northeast side of Indianapolis would like to receive their healthcare closer to home but are traveling elsewhere because the current service offerings aren’t diverse enough,” said Chad Dilley, chief operating officer at IU Health Saxony Hospital. “We’re thrilled to further our investment in the health and well-being of Hoosiers in and around the Fishers community by providing patients with greater access to highly skilled care that’s closer to home and consistent with their needs.”

Dubbed the “Fishers Community Impact Project” due its scope both on and off the hospital campus, the project timeline will vary for the individual elements included. Groundbreaking for the hospital expansion is expected in late 2022 with completion slated for 2025. The project is expected to double the hospital’s workforce.
