Three from SNM Honored by Hoosier State Press Association
Sagamore News Media, parent company of the Noblesville Daily Times, took home some pretty big honors in the annual state newspaper contest.
In the category of Best Editorial Writer, three SNM writers did the unusual and swept the category. Columnist Betsy Reason finished first, columnist John Marlowe finished second and publisher Tim Timmons was third.
“It’s a great honor to have the top three spots in one category,” SNM Chair Sen. Phil Boots said. “We’re very proud of our people for this achievement.”
In addition, John Marlowe finished first in the state in the category of Best Sports Commentary.
“John hasn’t been writing a weekly column for very long, just a few years,” Timmons explained. “During that time he has consistently either won or been among the top three in the state in several different categories. If this was high school sports, John would be a multi-time state champion.”
Timmons said that Reason is like that as well.
“This isn’t Betsy’s first rodeo, and certainly nowhere near her first award,” Timmons explained. “People don’t understand how hard it is to write a column each day, yet Betsy does it in such a way that she is extremely popular with our readers. There’s an old adage about writing a column being easy, just sit down at a typewriter and open a vein. Betsy gives a lot of herself, as well as sharing with thousands of readers her unique perspective on the people and events that make up Noblesville and Hamilton County. She is a joy to read.”
The annual contest is put on each year by the Hoosier State Press Association.
