Sheridan Youth Assistance Program

Sheridan Youth Assistance Program and Hamilton Heights Youth Assistance Program are recipients of a $75,000 grant funded by the Sheridan-Hamilton Heights Advisory Group (SHHAG).

This group is made up of northern Hamilton County businesses who want to focus on serving the direct needs of their communities. SYAP and HHYAP, both non-profit organizations, will divide these funds equally and are grateful for the generosity of this business group. These funds will be used to make a difference to families in each of the respective communities.

The grant funds will allow Sheridan Youth Assistance Program to focus on providing prekindergarten scholarships and before-after school childcare assistance to qualifying low-income families. Research indicates that children who have an opportunity to attend a pre-kindergarten program, develop important social and learning skills, and benefit with not only kindergarten readiness but further advantages into the primary grades. Scholarships for before and after school childcare helps ensure students are supervised, involved in pro-social activities, and exposed to planned experiences guided by a qualified adult. They are in a safe environment while their family is at work.

Hamilton Heights Youth Assistance Program will focus on a tutoring program for students in grades 5-8. The tutoring program has proven to be a successful remediation and enrichment for students outside the school day. Students’ complete homework, they can experience the value of completing assignments and its relationship to their academic achievement, and the success of the program has been noted by teachers, administrators, students, and families within the

Hamilton Heights School Corporation. It is a program making a difference and it will be able to continue this valuable and successful program because of this funding.
