Doreen Hillock
Doreen Hillock, age 71, of Sheridan, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 29, 2024, at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville, Indiana. Born September 19, 1953, in Lebanon, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late William Charles “Bill” and Mariam Jane “Mick” (Haughey) Hillock.
She was a 1971 graduate of Sheridan High School, a member of the Sheridan Junior Women’s Club, and a member of the Sheridan First United Methodist Church.
Doreen worked for BIMCO in Sheridan for a short time before opening her own business, Alterations Unlimited, on Main Street in town. For 20 years, she would take in, let out, shorten, lengthen, and do just about anything you could possibly need done to your clothing. If Doreen couldn’t fix the problem, it was time for a new outfit. She took pride in her work and loved helping her customers (even teaching them how to fix it themselves sometimes), and never fussed about how big or small the job was going to be. She loved working with her hands. In addition to her seamstress abilities, she was also a very gifted at crocheting.
Creative people like Doreen also need a creative outlet (or several) to help keep their lives in balance. She always enjoyed heading out to the shop to do a little woodworking, or sitting down for a crafting session, but what a select number of longtime Sheridan residents remember are the years she taught piano lessons out at her house. Helping people, no matter the situation, was just part of Doreen’s DNA.
She was an avid reader and never missed a chance to host a Home Interior Party, but her favorite thing in the whole world was spending time with her family. When Doreen became a grandma, life couldn’t get much better. . . but then she discovered Alabama football. She absolutely loved watching Alabama games with her son-in-law, John. To the casual observer the enthusiasm in the room was, let’s just say… a bit much, but to John and Doreen, there wasn’t any other way to do it. ROLL TIDE!!!
Doreen is survived by her son, Matthew David Barrick (Molly) of Sheridan; daughter, Kelly Jane Barrick (John Steiner) of Sheridan; 8 grandchildren, Shelby Merriman-Hicks (Christian), Lexey Merriman (David King), Dezare Hubner, Orion Steiner (Haley), Lars Steiner, Clark Barrick, Emmett Barrick, and Rosalyn Barrick; 7 great grandchildren, Daymien, Hinder, Devlin, Temperance, Kimberlynn, Archer, and Zander; sister, Sarah Dian McKinley of Sheridan; sister-in-law, Vickey Hillock of Sheridan; former husband, David Curtis Barrick; and by her feline furbaby, Binx. He is so lost without his momma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Charles “Bill” and Mariam Jane “Mick” (Haughey) Hillock; 2 brothers, William Dean Hillock, and Dale Hillock; and by her brother-in-law, Leroy Clark McKinley.
A celebration of Doreen’s life will take place at 12:00 PM on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Sheridan First United Methodist Church, 207 E. 2nd Street, Sheridan, Indiana, with visitation from 10:00 am until the time of service. Pastor John Meunier will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be presented to Roxie’s Pet Food Pantry, 602 Bow Street, Sheridan, Indiana 46069. This was a cause that Doreen held near and dear to her heart.
