Art To Dye For

Dip into dye and create silk art at 2nd SaturDate, a monthly opportunity to engage with artists and learn more about their process at Indiana Artisan Gifts & Gallery. Westfield silk painter Sylvia Gray will provide everything you need — including encouragement — to create a small silk masterpiece using dye.

You don’t need to be an artist to participate in this free make-and-take event, 1-5 p.m. March 8. Everyone who visits the gallery at 22 N. Rangeline Road in the Carmel Arts & Design District will take home something to treasure. Reservations are not needed. A Carmel Arts grant provides funding for the event.

As you paint, learn how Sylvia’s scarves, jackets, and framed wall art begin with an idea of color and shape. She lays out the design in paint or dye, and then steps back, looking for patterns and images to appear. “I let the fiber piece tell me what it wants to be, and I work to create that,” she says.

Sylvia will have a wide range of her work at the Indiana Artisan Marketplace, so as part of 2nd SaturDate, guests will be able to buy $7 Marketplace tickets ($3 off admission at the door).
